The holes and segments give the parasite some much needed texture, tapping i to the excitement that is trypophobia.  I suspect that phobia is evolutionary instinct to avoid things like beehives and such.  I was wanted to make it look gross to touch, which creates excitement when this girl feels like she needs to stop it or wrestle it.  That creates a dilema, does she not tuch it but let it do what it wants, or try to stop it from what iit wants to do?  That dilema creates more excitement.
