Hello my patrons! A nice local viewer recently gave me this Apple High Resolution Monochrome Monitor and it got me thinking.

Why did Apple make this monochrome monitor for their shiny new color Macintosh II line? Imagine spending $14,000 in today's money on a awesome fast color Macintosh to then turn around and pair it with a monochrome monitor. Especially I'm a bit baffled!

What do you think?

Why does this monitor exist?

The Macintosh II line was introduced by Apple in 1987, and it was really cutting edge and really great... but also super expensive. With that first Mac II, there was a gorgeous 13" color monitor to go with it. Then we have this monitor -- it's 12", it's monochrome and it looks just like the color monitor... but why did Apple release such a thing for this great new color computer? Warning! The following comment is NOT helpful to anyone and meaningless to everyone (except me). Read at your own peril! This was a great video to reminisce. I used work a computer store in the '90's and we sold PCs and Apples. Not that anyone cares --> To the Apple Guys, I was known as the PC Guy and to the PC Guys, I was known as the Mac Guy. It's because I was into all of them. :-)

I remember asking an xray technician why they make the pictures is black and white instead of color. He explained that there are 16 basic colors and black and white has 256 shades. He said the details on xrays were easier to find problems with black and white than color, so maybe this monochrome was a medical need?
