Hello my patrons! You probably noticed I didn't release a video last weekend. It seemed the previous week's 6502 video was doing quite well and my recent time away put me behind on things, so I decided to give myself a little breathing room and skip releasing the C64 repair video. I actually made a post Saturday morning referencing an old video of mine (From 2018) that I thought was interesting but never got many views. Check it out if you hadn't seen it:

Real-time audio spectrum analyzer from 1981 - https://youtu.be/kQcClC1KP-o

Anyway, I decided to post the video from two weekends from now for my Patrons to enjoy, which I finished this past weekend. It's about the NEC APC or Advanced Personal Computer. Billed as the "More Capable PC" it was NEC's attempt at a personal computer. While it's an 8086 based system and runs MS-DOS (And CPM86) it really is not IBM PC compatible at all. (And makes no claims to be.) The big claim to fame of this machine is the integrated dual 8" double sided disk drives. In 1982, this was quite "Fancy" as these drives could store over 1 meg of data each -- something the IBM PC didn't get until the IBM PC AT came out with 1.2mb 5.25" drives.

As you can imagine, things didn't go NEC's way and the 4th iteration of this machine was just IBM PC compatible, having giving up all the market they had developed.

Enjoy and I'm working on the part 2 this week.

Damn this thing is so overbuilt ... back when they intended computers to last more than a couple years and see real use. This machine is awesome. It's like looking back at a future that never was, but maybe should have been.

What a great little computer. :)
