Hello my patrons! To run anything on the SWTPC 6800, you need more than 128 bytes of RAM that is installed on the CPU card. So in this video, I install, test and locate bad RAM on the SWTPC 4K RAM card that came with the machine. Everything on this machine feels new to me -- but it's really fun! More videos on it coming soon. Trying to mix them in with other types of videos so people who aren't interested in it have something to watch. :-)

Searching for bad RAM on a 45 year old SWTPC 4K RAM board

This is part 3 in the SWTPC 6800 computer series. In this video, I teach myself how to test the 4K RAM board and then figure out what is bad on it. This is all a learning experience for me! Hi Adrian! Great to see the machine up and running! I first used one of these machines in the very early 1980s - our school computer lab had two of them - one a fully tricked-out system with floppy drives, running Flex, and a simpler, cassette-only system. Pinned on the wall behind the cassette machine was a printout showing the hex codes you'd need to enter to invoke a ROM-based BASIC. I'd always assumed the hex was 6800 machine code to change an I/O register to page in the BASIC ROM, but now I wonder whether it was simply setting up a parameter block describing the machine's available RAM. I wish I'd made a note of the magic incantations!!

One chip! Gwaaaarr! Impressive it still works as well as it does after all this time. But they really did make things to last back then. Always good to see your process in diagnosing these things, and well done for not giving up despite no replacements.
