Hello my patrons! Time for a casual test and try video where I test some random PC hardware someone gave me the other day. The first thing I look at is a Oak OTIVGA card with the famed dual outputs, digital and analog. I never thought much about these cards but after some testing here, I think I've changed my mind about them. And then we have a couple old motherboards, one of which is a 286 board with 8 SIPP memory slots. 8mb of RAM on a 286? I'm not sure I've ever encountered this -- and the chipset even supports up to 16mb of RAM although it's not implemented on this motherboard. So enjoy a little bit of random exploration and fun on this old hardware.

Thanks for all your support!

J and J's 8-bit Retro and Repair

I'm going to cast my vote for the video card crashing to be either a partially corrupt or buggy video BIOS with the possibility that CGA wasn't well tested on that card. It is strange to me that it would just crash and reboot the whole system switching the video mode especially since it would be emulated in VGA unless it was either: a. running invalid operations b. triggering interrupts improperly c. going haywire on the ISA bus (which you may be able to detect with a logic analyser). I think a deep dive investigation on this card's behaviour switching to CGA graphics mode would be interesting considering how erratic it is.

Call me silly, but that 16-color (VGA over TTL) Doom looks like woven tapestry to me. It’s actually kind of cute…
