One of the most important skills to develop as a musician / performer is a strong sense of rhythm.

A strong inner sense of rhythm gives solidity and presence to your performance and allows the listeners to easily tune, align and harmonize with your performance.

It is the underlying consistent beat that remains the same while you play with the intensity levels and emotional aspects of playing / singing, and "holds the song together".

About the tutorial

In this video I use the song "All related" by Nessi Gomes (check out the tutorial here), to demonstrate a simple (yet tricky!) rhythm exercise I often use in lessons, in different variations and difficulty levels.

We practice two skills:

1. Listening to an external source of rhythm (metronome) and developing the ability to constantly listen, while playing and synching with the external beat.

2. Developing an "internal metronome" and learning to keep it going steady while playing with intensity levels and different fingerpicking / strumming techniques.

------------------------------------------------------------------

A strong sense of Rhythm gives your performance more solidity and presence

When you play in a singing circle, or in a performance, you are in a way offering a certain energy field and inviting the listeners to join, align and harmonize.

The rhythm is the "glue", it is the element which people are unconsciously tuning into, in a very physical level.

When you're able to hold a consistent rhythm, the energetic field that you are offering will feel more stable and solid, and it will be easier for the listeners to align and harmonize.

Thank you!!! id love to practice this. Is there a clear example anywhere of a fingerpicking and strumming pattern we can practice with the same rhythm? I see the all related video has the fingerpicking pattern. Wondering what's the strumming pattern? Hope this makes sense... :D

Sure This strumming pattern from Vuela con el viento will work here as well (that's what I am playing): https://www.patreon.com/posts/78944966
