The night was clear but hot. My mother, my father, the kids, myself, and Jen were all outside, sitting under the stars. We couldn’t be loud, but we could at least sit quietly and enjoy the fresh air of the forest. It was a long way away from anything dead, so the air was clean and refreshing.

“While it is very hot, this is still not too bad.” Jen was sitting next to me. She was sweating, but she had a smile on her face.

“Yeah, it’s pretty hot.” The temp at night dipped down to about one hundred and ten(43c) degrees. It was still very hot, but it was not as bad as when the sun was out. For the people living in these conditions above land, they would feel this temperature as spring.

We spent a few hours outside before the kids could no longer take it. We all headed in and cooled off. After showering and feeling like new, we settled in for the night. What worried me the most about this situation was that this kind of heat can spark fires. So if people are careless, a fire could erupt, starting a massive fire. And with no one around to keep it contained, it would burn on forever or until it went out on its own.

While we would be safe from the flames, I worry about the air that is being sucked into the ventilation system. I had not planned for massive fires since there were none before. I can only hope the air filtration system will do its job. I will also need to come up with some plans for worst case scenarios. With all these on my mind, I slowly fell asleep.

A week and a half later, I was sitting in the living area playing a game with the kids when my mother came into the room. “We finished!”

“You made a cooling system for clothing?” I asked in surprise.

“Yes. It is a kind of liquid nanobot. You dip your clothing into it, and it will coat it with the nanobots, which will when in contact with heat, release cool air. It will basically surround you in cool air so you can walk around in temperatures up to three hundred degrees.” My mother explained.

I had to admit my parents were geniuses. “That is quite amazing. How long does it last for?” This was the most important part.

“Four days. We finished four days ago and were testing its length. After dipping a shirt into the liquid, it stops generating cool air after four days. This can be extended by it will take time.” My mother answered.

“That is good enough. I will be the test subject who will go up top when temps reach their peak.” I wanted to test it out on myself first since my entire body is built differently than everyone else’s.

“I was hoping you would say that!” My mother smiled and gave me the: That’s my daughter’s look. I just wished she was so not apt to send me into hell! She was much nicer to Jen! But I also know I am the best candidate for this as well.

I gave my mother a set of clothes for me to wear. It was just a long sleeve shirt and a pair of jeans. She went back down to the lab and dunked them. The good thing about this liquid was that it dried almost instantly when it came in contact with the clothing. It also seemed they could make quite a bit of it quickly.

After getting the clothes, I put them on and headed upstairs. I checked the temp by the door, which read one hundred and sixty degrees. At such temperatures, if one was not in a basement or a place with a fan of some sort to help cool your body down, then you would die. It would be very rare for a person to live in this kind of heat without some form of cooling.

But the clothing I had on seemed to make a cool dome of air around me. This dome even covered my head. As I stepped outside, I did not feel any different. I sealed the door to the base and sat down in the sun. The trees at the side were starting to wilt due to the heat and lack of rain. I could not feel the heat at all. I have no idea how my parents made such clothing, but it felt quite amazing.

I spent a whole six hours outside before going back in. The test was a huge success. “How was it?” My mother looked at me with expectant eyes. I smiled and gave her a thumbs up. “Amazing!”

“Good. This means we have a means to bring people back. Ai, can you put these in your inventory and not have them expire?” My mother asked.

“Yeah. I tested it with hot food. Whatever I put in will always have time stopped for it, and it will keep the same freshness as it did when I stuck it into my inventory. This is why all the food stock is in my inventory.” I answered. I loved my inventory!

“Then I will ready some clothes for all sizes. Men, women, children. So if you spot anyone, please use these clothes to bring them back to the base.” My mother’s idea was not bad. It was just that.

“I can always send them through a portal though…..” I said, pursing my lips.

“What if you can’t!? What if you have no choice but to walk them back? You never know. Those damn robot things might come up with some kind of jammer to keep you from using a portal. So always have things on back up just in case!”
