Why did we take Looney back....? Should've offloaded his ass to some sucker team to keep Chriss

Anonymous

In Bob we "used to" trust....haven't been a fan of his moves since Jerry West left. So many busts now I can't even count.

Major Powers

Whoa whoa Walter! Eric Paschall? Burks for a song? Spellman's production? I mean jesus he got us D'lo when KD could have just walked for nothing. We actually ended up with a scorer or trade chip when it could have just been crickets and more MLEs on the roster.

Ezra Abbey

Marquese is not "our best rim protector" he's - OUR ONLY RIM PROTECTOR*. The only logical explanation for this move has to be something behind the scenes. Marquese was showing so much promise, his maturity was what stuck out the most, he's made such a change and has a lot of potential. I think a few years from now he's gonna be a really nice piece, and we're gonna regret this.

Dan Doerge

Maybe the thinking should be expanded to comparing front court players - like should Chriss go before Weedin' Willie? or? BTW - I am also very disappointed. Chriss has been a major bright spot this season.

The argument shouldn’t be Marquese or Lee. They were heavy at Chris’s position- Loon-Dog, Big O, and Limp-Willie. Now, I would have kept Chriss over Limp-Willie but I think the personality of Chriss wasn’t the ideal fit. Keep it a buck, Lee’s performance against the Rockets (National TV) secured the deal for him on top of being Steph’s Brother and we being light at that position. Chriss needed to come in and score, which he showed he could do when he wanted to. Something you have been wanting all year for him. He just wasn’t looking for it consistently and he really wasn’t a good fit for the GSW brand

Anonymous

Naw, they have been developing him and he has shown he can do his thing when the lights are the brightest. Just gotta stay healthy. Chris’s wasn’t really supposed to make the team anyway.

Anonymous

I’m wit you Dan! Limp Willie has been a major disappointment! I just be smh. I guess they kept him cause he used to give us the business with Kings, but his play has just been atrocious

Major Powers

Could it have been the Luka shove and Cuban called Lacob in a fuckin huff?

John Z

I just don't know, Chriss and these young guys have been the bright spot of the season. Hate me all you want but I think it's time we trade Draymond, his value in season higher and we need to be able to sign people. His liabilities are becoming more and more apparent, even in the playoffs; and all of these young 4/5 have the skill and poetential to eat up those minutes and grow over this season and the next. There comes a point where you have to make a move.

Reasons for cutting Chriss would probably be: Looney is a better defender and has shown he can shoot the 3. He shot well in college but never really had to when we had the 'big 3'. Attitude. Apparently there were some problems in the locker room, not just the Luka incident. He's got a lot of potential so it feels like we let a steal slip away but this may have been the correct decision who knows. That said, Damion Lee better be shooting 40% from 3s because he sure as hell isn't getting better defensively.

Anonymous

I don't know about that. Yes Draymond is limited offensively (god fckkng damn it he is still shooting below 30% from 3 left wide open) but I think we are starting to see a trend in the league. That trend is teams do better with one primary playmaker. It simplifies the offense. Now if we keep DLo he may take over that aspect of the game but he is such a bad fit defensively.

I will nut if we somehow get Giannis or KAT on a good deal this summer

This is my take: 1. We had too many centers. We have looney, willie, omari, chriss, and smiley. The reason why we didnt see Omari play as much is because we were planning to cut him or Chriss. I feel given the minutes, Omari played better overall, which is why we kept him. I know looney and willie aren't playing to their full potential, but we know what looney can offer and his contract is too good to give up. Willie, right now, is more skilled and a better fit for our team (it's just his disappointing effort and motivation at times). I feel he sets better screens, rolls better, and is a better defensive anchor compared to chriss when/if he tries. We are stuck with his contract too till next year, and I don't think anyone wants him right now. So, it is better to give him more minutes to develop and see where it takes us. 2. We are trying to compete starting next year, and when we are fully healthy, we won't have time to develop our guys any longer. This is why they wanted to give Damion Lee (and probably Ky Bowman) the time to develop against NBA teams vs. the G-League. Also, they are probably going to be very cheap two/three year contracts which will be great for the coming years. 3. This summer is going be very, very interesting. Right now, our trade assets are Burks, D-Lo, and our pick. We can try to swing D-Lo and our pick for a premier wing/center, or just keep them if there are no good offers. Not only that, there is a good chance that we will pick up Iggy for cheap too. So right now, our team can look like Guards: Curry, D-Lo*, Klay, Bowman, Lee, Wings: Dray, Paschall, Iggy*, Glen III, Evans, Poole Center: Looney, Willie, Omari, Smiley Our first round pick, if we keep it, will probably be a Wing or a Center.

As a Hooper I feel bad for Chriss hopefully he’s in the right mental state

athleticalchemy

right it was log jam..but WCS will be gone and Looney has never proven he can play heavy minutes.

Daniel Fries

thoughts on why - 1. He was going to ruin the tank - 2. We're gonna trade a guard for a more talented big man (Dlo for the greek?). 3. Or maybe they know more about Smiley than we do. Curry won't be traded (thinking of your trade video Alch). Too bad. Chriss is fantastic

Anonymous

lee has been doing good but i can't trust him long term, i cant say i know why either but next season when the squad is ready, chriss with draymond's help could have really been something on both ends.

Ravi Dissanayake

Warriors have a track record of letting go of world class bigs smh. Either way, Burks, WCS, will be in the trade block along with Dlo. I hope to god we can get covington.

Anonymous

It may have been something off-court. I can imagine, put in less comfortable terms, that Chris may have been a bit to ‘Oakland’ and not enough ‘San Francisco’ for the GSW brand. But that’s TOTALLY a gut hunch...In basketball terms, Smiley, Looney and Spellman all fit their play-style goals better, I think. Shooting, passing and playmaking at every position. I have NO ideas what the future of WCS is, but it seems clear that only a big was expendable....And maybe this helps them figure out a way to keep Ky Bowman as well!

Anonymous

Finally saw this but I’m pretty sure Chris’s deal was non guaranteed if I remembered it right and the guaranteed date was coming up so I think that’s what was up with the timing of him getting waived. That point you made about players playing hard in the playoffs is a real good one and I’m not sure keeping damion over is gonna be a good one.

Strong Foru

Bob Myers has a long-term vision that most of us will never have or comprehend and he has a great track record to prove it. I know that in this moment, it's frustrating, but I trust that he has something huge up his sleeves. He's like the chess player who has thought 10 moves ahead of the competition.

This news totally shocked me for sure. In a season like this where we have very little to look forward to, seeing the players go from where they started to how much they've improved now was a small bright spot to look forward to. Chriss was at the center of that growth. We can say all we want about money and his play and perhaps his lesser presence on the offensive end, but the dude brought that energy and what you typically call the dog that we really still lack. I enjoyed the little shove that he put on the NBA face boy the other night. The league fined him for it, though would he really have been fined if it wasn't Luka? Hard to say. :) But anyway, Chriss, and I want to say Bowman too, are both the type of players that bring that energy to the team of being the fighters that you don't want to mess with. They show that aggressiveness differently, but they both have that in them. You are right to say that Lee earned his spot. He really was amazing for a little while now, but there must have been something else that could have been done. I don't know. I was definitely disappointed. There goes one of the bright spots of this year's Warriors. (But, it is good that Spellman and some of the others will most likely get more playing time. I won't deny that).

Agree 100%. Terrible front office decision. Chriss went so hard every time he took the floor. Mistake.

Anonymous

Odd.... but my senses tell me your knickers are in a knot cause your looking at this in isolation, bigger moves in the works that makes sense of this. Bob we trust but your comments on lack of talented bigs waiting in the wings are spot on.

Anonymous

Sad, depressing, short sighted but most of all undermines the culture by saying one thing while performing actions that say we don't make these decisions based on the merit of performance....can't spin it any other way.

Anonymous

Sort of ironic don't you think that Steve is always saying we did/did not bring the energy (or force) tonight in post game comments.

Anonymous

i have a different expression, but Bowman can pick up 94 and turn the ball, by that we mean he can stop the ball handlers progress in a direction and make the ball handler change direction , and then he can recover position and turn it again... only warrior who can do that.

Interesting insight from the preview of the Athletic post: "They liked Chriss, for sure. A part of the front office hopes he doesn’t get claimed off of waivers, so the team can bring him back in March. The Warriors would definitely be interested in signing him in the offseason, which for Chriss is a sign of how impressive he was during this make-good opportunity. But they weren’t just going to dump other assets. The only asset they could actually just dump, the one the Warriors were least invested in, was Chriss." My thoughts - it looks like if he's around and no one else better is available, then there's a chance. Sounds like the main reason was due to his non-guaranteed contract. That said, if your poll was Chriss vs. Lee, I would have picked Chriss.

athleticalchemy

Covington is not the type of player you hope to god to get... that deal would be if the Dlo experimenter this wrong and we lost value in him.

Anonymous

Agreed, and to your point it will potentially validate how bad of a decision it was. Will be watching what happens closely. I still expect the Burks and maybe GR3 trade to occur. Dubs are definitely placing their bets on Smiley now...

Anonymous

Yeah, my hunch that there was some kind of non-fit off court seems to be totally wrong. Chris was interviewed and said, “ who knows? I would like to be here. So eventually, if that happens, I would be all for it.” and coaching and players all seemed genuinely bummed to see him go.

Anonymous

I think the phrase you were going for at the end was “null and void”. Meaning the debate is no longer valid.

Anonymous

I don't know if someone mentioned it but this was written by Monte Poole this morning and definitely plays a factor, if not is the entire decision to wave Chriss... "Warriors have 17 months to clear enough cap space and prepare their pitch to Giannis and his agent, Alex Saratsis. That Saratsis is the agent is significant because he also represents Damion Lee."

paul reboca sr

Al whatever the reason i just cant wrap my feelings around this as a true blue warrior fan. Chriss is a young dog with heart, i swear man i would prefer him over WCS at this point, Mr. Stein seems uninterested.
