It might have been the director's intent, just a hippie trip, but the book it was based on was based on the life of this man: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_C._Lilly Once a respected scientist, he invented the isolation tank (among other contributions to science still in use today) and did extensive research into the whole taking-psychedelics-while-in-an-isolation-tank thing, and claims to have had experiences that make "Altered States" appear more like a documentary than just entertainment. He was eventually abandoned by the serious scientific community (for good reason) but his life makes for an interesting Wikipedia page to peruse.

You mentioned the only people you recognized...one of the scientist guys was also in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, he was the mapmaker who was shown as a translator at first.
