Every year in linguistics departments across the world, linguists crack out their favourite linguistic examples and welcome a new cohort of introductory linguistics students. Lauren is so excited to be getting back into the Ling101 classroom (it's the beginning of the new academic year in Australia) that this whole episode is about our best tips for teaching (and learning!) linguistics. It's a behind-the-scenes look into how we structure Lingthusiasm episodes -- and how you can apply techniques from educational research and practice into explaining other complex topics that you're enthusiastic about.

In this bonus episode of Lingthusiasm, Gretchen and Lauren talk about teaching linguistics, and how you can be your own best teacher even if you aren't heading to university any time soon. We discuss ways to make learning about more than just terminology, how to get right into data from the beginning, and how to keep a clear picture of how linguistics is relevant to other things you're studying or enjoying.

If you haven't joined the Lingthusiasm Discord yet and you want to teach yourself more linguistics, we have a channel called Linguistics Basics Book Club where people are reading through a free online intro linguistics textbook together and some Discord members with more linguistics background are standing by to answer questions. We're just finishing up Chapter 2 so it's still very doable to get caught up! Here's how to link your Patreon and Discord accounts together to get access

I’ve been attempting to share my Lingthusiasm with my sisters for MONTHS, and I only now realize I have been teaching jargon first! Thanks for the tips! This is one of the most helpful episodes I’ve listened to so far!
