Make sure you download the MP3 with today's lesson and turn up the bass because that is me on the bass! I don't know what the bass line is in the song so I wrote my own and I dig it!

Today we are going to learn how to play Christmas by Wham! on the Ukulele. The song is only 4 chords with one chord progression that plays throughout the entire song, so to teach you the song really only takes about 3 minutes. So it make it a little more fun I am also going to teach you how to play the melody of the song as well. It is a really nice melody and it is a great example of how to use color tones over chords. For example how to sing the E note over the D chord. The D chord is D, F# and A, a major chord with a root, 3rd and 5th, when you sing the E over it then it implies a Dadd9 sound, which is lovely. Showing you that you don't have to only use the chord tones for melody and you can do more with color tones than just use them as passing tones. It is also a good example of syncopation in melody and the power of playing your melody on the & as well. The tutorial will walk you through the chords, strum pattern, alternative strum pattern and the melody as well, enjoy!

Will Improve

  • Melody in D major
  • A melody that uses semi-stable tones and color tones
  • Keyboard style groove
  • Amazing 80s hair
