Today we are going to learn all 7 modes, two of these you already know, the Ionian and the Aeolian, because these are the Major and Minor scales, there are 5 more however and today we are going to walk through each one of them one at a time, highlight the color tones, or the notes that make them modal and then at the end I will show you how to practice by taking a well known melody and applying modal changes to it so you can see how the different modes sound when played against melodies that you already know.

The idea is to play each mode one a time with C as the root and then talk about how makes them special, or the intervals that make them what the are. For example C dorian is a minor scale but it also has a major 6th and that is what makes it unique. In knowing that you can highlight that 6th interval in your melodies and solo to really make the progression and song have a strong Dorian feel.

The seven modes are

  • Ionian - Also known as the major scale
  • Dorian
  • Phygrian
  • Lydian
  • Mixolydian
  • Aeolian - Also known as the minor scale
  • Locrian

More Dorian

More Mixolydian

that was interesting presentation. I usually think of modes in terms of a key. For example, C ionian, D dorian, E phrygian, etc. which are modes of C. I never went around the circle of fifths plucking all the C's from the different keys.
