The first Wednesday of the month we do a Baritone ukulele tutorial and this month we are going to teach you how to play a song, the song is Wagon Wheel by Old Crow Medicine Show with writing credits to Bob Dylan as well because according to the folklore legend Dylan wrote and recorded the chorus in 1973 and the lead singer for Old Crow Medicine Show finished the song by adding verses in 25 years later.
The Baritone ukulele tutorial for Wagon Wheel has two versions, the studio version which is the key that Darius Rucker and Old Crow Medicine Show sing it in, it is worth noting that Darius sings it an entire octave below, so while it is the same melody he is singing it much much lower. I find that the Old Crow version is to high for me, and the Darius version is too low, plus they use the same chords and one of those chords is an F#m which is a barre chord, so we want to play a version that avoids that chords, so the tutorial also has an easy version which is in the key of G. Depending on your vocal range and your ability to play barre chords you will be able to play either one.
Will Improve
- Barre chords
- Choosing the right key for your skill level and voice
- Simple whole tone transposition
- Letting chords ring out
- The bouncy Bluegrass/New Grass style strum
