For today's tutorial we will start off with that very cool riff that is so famously used to kick of the song, look at the verse in two different strum patterns, one for beginners and one for more advanced players, after that it is how to play the verse melody, at least an intro to it so you can get your singing started and then you have a breakdown of the strumming part in the chorus. Those are all the pieces you need to learn how to play this classic rock song from 1976. You can also take the riff out and you have a Fly Like an Eagle in the style of Seal from space jam!
Some cool theory. The song, in my opinion, is a one chord song with a chromatic line moving on top of it, however, if you were to really examine the harmony it would be more of a Am7, D7, F, Am chord, having said that the harmony is about intention, and you could also think of it as a Am7, Am6, Amb6, Am chord. In that case you can think of them all as a variant of the Am chord and somewhat of a one chord song.
