New Ukulele tutorials every Wednesday and Saturday, subscribe and learn! Today we are going to learn how to play "Oye Como Va" by Santana on our Ukulele. This classic two chord song, that's right, just two chords! Is full of fingerpicking, licks, cool latin rhythms and a lot of intricate pieces showing you just how much you can get out of just two chords. I think that the solo is doable on the ukulele so if there is interest in me teaching how to play the full solo let me know and I will give it a go. Most of this song is instrumental, there is only a 4 bar singing phrase that happens 4 times throughout the songs, specifically two verses were it repeats itself one time, so most of this song is about learning all the instrumental pieces. We will walk you through each one, the intro groove, intro solo, interludes, the syncopated salsa rhythm, everything you need to play every single piece of this Santana Classic.

I've seen people sing this song all the way from Alaska to Argentina, Barrow to Ushuaia, one of the few songs that is equally popular in English speaking American and Spanish speaking America, I don't know about Brasil, I have never been there, but I imagine that my brasileño friends rock with it, too! Part of the reason is because the song was original recorded as a Cha-Cha-Chá by Tito Puente in 1962, but it was Santana's 1970 cover that took the song to the next level. This song has come to symbolize the power of mixing different genres and it is looked at as mixing Puerto Rican, Cuban and American rhythms into something not only unique, but lovely. Peaking at 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 but also charting on Billboards R&B and Easy Listening charts... not sure how it made it onto those but hey, it did!

Will improve

  • Soloing in A minor
  • Salsa/Cuban Rhythm
  • Simply melody
  • Two chord song vocabulary

Tyler, I would like it if you start out playing the whole piece through once so we can hear what it sounds like as a whole before starting to break it down cord by chord. Also play the sections in between, please.🙏🏼 I like your song choices. 😊

I agree with Helga. A play through would be helpful. Thanks Tyler! Your videos always brighten my day. Great uke lessons from a positive and uplifting soul!

I try to the only problem is last month I had some tech issues with my headphones so I couldn’t listen whole recording but I am going to make a play through for this entire song. Sorry about the tech issue, songs like this benefit massively from a play through and you are totally correct!

Hi Cindy, here is what I told Helga but I want you to see it too.
