New Ukulele Tutorials every Wednesday and Saturday Today we are going to learn how to play After Midnight by JJ Cale. JJ Cale, along with Bill Withers, are easily two of my favorite musicians of all time. The album Naturally is all time favorite, easily top 5 and maybe top 3. The other song that you would recognize off this album is Call Me the Breeze made uber famous by Lynyrd Skynyrd. That is the real tragedy of JJ, you probably can sing 5 of sings songs... but don't even know that they are his songs! He, along with Leon Russell are responsible for creating the Tulsa sound and putting Tulsa Oklahoma on the map! Another one of the things that I love about this song is that he is almost talk singing and it makes his music some of the easiest for me sing. River Runs Deep, After Midnight, Cocaine... all songs made super famous by Eric Clapton, who was a very close friend of JJ and he LOVED to cover his music, including this song. Clapton even made an album called "The Breeze: An Appreciation of JJ Cale" after he died with all kinds of amazing musicians playing JJ's music, check out John Mayer's cover of Magnolia if you want to hear how amazing the covers of JJ's music are... but they are never as good as the original!
