Today we are going to learn find our vocal range and how to use that vocal range to sing songs in keys that are more appropriate for our voice. I am notorious on the internet for being a poor singer, that comes from two reasons.

  • 1. It is really hard hard to sing two songs perfectly in 7 days and youtube commenters think anything less than perfection is trash.
  • 2. Vocal Range. I teach the song in the key of the artist so that way when you turn on your phone, computer, or whatever you play with, and play-along with the song, you will be playing the same chords as them. Sometimes that makes my tutorials a little harder and sometimes it makes them impossible for me to sing because they aren't in my vocal range.

A vocal range is the lowest note that you can sing and the highest note that you can sing. Once you know that range you can determine if songs are good for you to sing or not. If a song has a note higher, or lower, then you can sing, the song is out of your vocal range. To fix that you transpose the song, meaning moving the melody and chords, to different key signature that is more comfortable for your voice. If you know how to do this well you can take any song that is out there and move it into a range that you can sing. This is a three step process.

  • 1. Know your vocal range
  • 2. Know the range of the song you want to sing
  • 3. Transpose that song into a key that is better for you.

Thank you for covering this topic! I struggle with the signing even more than the uke. Signing always looks so natural but it’s not for me! It was really nice to see you learning and practicing at the end. I’ve tried some voice training apps but none have resonated. Any suggestions? One minor piece of feedback: in chord melody tutorials could you be very explicit on key changes from the original version. I have a tough time hearing differences in keys that others seem to find obvious. Also, on song sheets, a starting note for the voice might help me. Great work and keep it up!

Dan, thanks for the comment! Let's see if we can help Any suggestions? - Do you have a keyboard? The very first step is being able to sing a single pitch and hear if you can hear it, are you able to do that? That is the very first step. Once you get there the next thing is to sing then go sharp and back in key then flat and back in key, so you can also hear how it sounds when you are close. After that try singing all the vowel sounds over the notes, all the notes you sing are always vowels, then apply this to scales. One minor piece of feedback: in chord melody tutorials could you be very explicit on key changes from the original version. To clarify, you are asking that I make sure to note if I have transposed the key? Also, on song sheets, a starting note for the voice might help me I LOVE this idea. Thanks for the feedback Dan!

Didn’t you? I can’t get it out of my head now 😀
