Today we are going to learn how to play "Wonderful Tonight" by Eric Clapton in the finger style version, also known as chord melody ukulele, which means you will be able to play the harmony and melody at the same time!

The classic song opens with the iconic riff and then it is off to the verse, the song. Within the song the riff functions as the chorus so you can just keep on moving there and then after that there is a bridge and a coda to learn, as always we will learn how to play them all, piece by piece, bit by bit and in no time you will be able to play this entire classic Eric Clapton song.

We have done quite a bit of Clapton in the past, including a chord melody version of I Shot the Sheriff which was a version based on both of the songs, revolving around Clapton's use of the riff and key and of course Bob's groove and melody, but if you want some Clapton to strum look no further than tenthumbs, we have tons of Eric Clapton ukulele tutorials.

Will improve

  • Chord melody in G
  • Sliding in rhythm
  • Walking bass lines
  • Moving the A and G shapes around the fretboard

Quick music reading question for the verse we should be playing bars 5 through 22 and then go back to 5 play to 19 then skip to 23&24 then head into the bridge at 25, right?

Lynn Bastoni

Awesome lesson, Tyler! Love the arrangement and the way you broke it down. Thank you!

Yes. I should do a lesson on that. We did a sheet music series but it focuses on the notes, it would be valuable to revisit to talk about this exact thing.

My pleasure! This one was a ton of fun to put together, I am very pleased with the results and happy that you had as much fun with it as I did!
