For today's tutorial we are going to explore the classic Elton John song "Your Song" in the Fingerstyle (also known as chord melody) on the ukulele. It is always fun to do some Elton John so why not a Fingerstyle Ukulele Tutorial for Your Song with all the tabs all the screen! As always it is my arrangement, I tried to give this one a little more of a piano vibe by doing a more sparse approach to the melody and harmony. You can play this song on any sized ukulele, but you do have to get all the way up to the 14th fret to grab a B note and you also have to barre the 7th fret and play the 9th fret of the G string (as it moves to the 7th and 6th fret in this really cool Em, Em/D, Em/C# descending movement) so a bigger ukulele would make it easier, but I have been able to play it on my soprano as well.

Will improve

  • Playing chord melody in G
  • Using sparse rhythm techniques
  • Fingerpicking fingerstyle rhythm
  • Moving bass lines

When released as a single on the 45 record Your Song was actually the B side to Take Me to the Pilot, but it was the preferred song of the disc jockeys eventually making it all the way to number 8 on the billboard charts in USA. The song order is Intro Verse 1 Verse turnaround Verse 2 Pre Chorus Chorus Chorus Turnaround Verse 3 Verse turnaround Verse 4 Pre Chorus Chorus Post Chorus Coda That means to learn how to play it we need to learn the intro, verse, turnaround, pre-chorus, chorus, post chorus and coda, a lot of these ideas, like the turnarounds can be lumped in with the the verse or the chorus. The original recording of this song is in the key of Eb, this tutorial is 4 steps higher in the key of G, if you are arranging your own solo ukulele songs the keys of C, F and G are my three favorites. If you are interested in learning how to play and sing the song we also have a tutorial here in the key of D. We actually filmed that tutorial in 2019 when we did the epic van trip. I am still saving up money to buy an new van and do that again! Your Song - Strummer/Singer Tutorial - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpxqusIWauY Enjoy!
