Today we are going to learn how to play "Under the Sea" by Alan Menken. The song is from the 1989 Disney classic "The Little Mermaid" and it is basically about the crab, Sebastien, pleading with Ariel that life is good under the sea and that you don't need to go up to the land with all the bi-pedals, life is good under the sea!

Musically the chords are fairly basic, we are in the key of C, chord wise we are only using diatonic chords with the exception of a nice D7 and a C7 in the chorus, which harmonically don't exist in the key of C (in addition of the F# and Bb notes are coming from different keys) but other than that harmonically it is straight forward.

If you are new to this style make sure you check out the #ChordMelodyChallenge with a 10 day crash course in this style to really get you rocking and rolling.

Will improve

  • Chord melody in C
  • Extending chord shapes
  • Use of the high G string in rhythmic ideas

Hey man loving this so far, at minute 17:00 you were jamming over the f chord with a lick. It looked similar to the c minor pentatonic shape 2, but not quite. I'm just getting into this. I'm sure you were going over a scale here. Maybe not. Mind elaborating? EDIT: obviously that's the C major pentatonic shape 2 same as Am. Relative minors, how could I forget. :d yeah don't mind me just getting started with music theory ;p

Hey Robert! You are off to a great start! I was primarily working in the C major pentatonic, but that scale doesn't have an F note, so I mix it with the F arpeggio (F A C, the A and C are in the scale, so another way to think about it is a C major pentatonic with an F note, or a "hexatonic" scale)
