B.B. King. The only thing more giant these his hands was his legend. One of the most legendary blues guitarist every to do it, and when he started playing guitar at the age of 12 he would continue to do up until the day he died at 90 years old. For 78 years B.B. was making his guitar sing and giving us that signature humming bird vibrato. So what is the BB Box? What makes it so special? How can we use it in our playing?

The BB Box is a particular shape built around the root note of any given key on the Ukulele's E string. With this root we build a hybrid scale that mixes the major pentatonic, the minor pentatonic and the blues scale. It contains the root, major 2nd interval, major 3rd, 4th, b5th, 5th and back to the root. This is played over both the I7 chord, so in a G blues the G7 and the V7 chord, in today's example of the key of G that would be the D7 chord.

By mixing this box, referring to the new shape that we have created on the fretboard, with the minor pentatonic we can create a much more dynamic range of sounds and a stronger sense of harmony. Using these techniques you can outline the chord changes, making the solo "stick" to the chords more. I know when you are first learning it feels like there is a disconnect between the notes you play and the chords underneath, this is a good way to start to improve on that disconnect.
