Today's tutorial is how to play "Waitin' for the Bus" by ZZ Top. This one is a ton of fun to play and can be played in two distinct levels. An easy beginner version for everyone and a blistering riff style version that is closer to what Billy Gibbons is playing on his guitar. The A minor riff is based around the A minor pentatonic scale targeting the notes in the scale that are in both the scale and the a minor chord, this is called targeting chord tones and it will make your scale stick to the chord progression more.

ZZ Top - Waitin' For the Bus - Easy Beginner/Advanced Riff Versions - Ukulele Tutorial

A minor Riff – This riff is made up from the A minor pentatonic targeting scale tones. That means Billy Gibbons used the scale but also knew that the 9th fret C string is an A note and the 7th is as G note, the b7th, which makes the A minor an Am7. The double stop, 7th A string, 8th E string are C and E notes, the b3rd and the 5th. Am7 is A – C – E – G notes. The notes of the A minor pentatonic scale are A – C – D – E and G, the only note not used was the D note, so this as an amazingly clever arpeggio. D7 Riff – The D7 riff uses a D note, C note and an F note. The F note is the minor 3rd, so we use a blues curl to imply the F#, the major third. Playing with the minor and major 3rd is a classic blues trick. When it drops to the D7 the riff is again targeting chord tones and still in the scale, but it leaves the A minor pentatonic scale and enters the A minor scale when it adds an F note, that same F note has a blues curl in it, implying the F#, which is a chord tone in the D7 chord. D minor has an F note, D7 has an F#, playing with those two note is very common in blues music. Turnaround – These three are all arpeggios as well, the E7 one is very clever. The 7 hammer 8 is G to G#, b3rd to 3rd, again playing on that dynamic. It also uses a jump down from the E note, 7th fret A string, to an octave below on the 4th fret of the C string and then jumps back up a b7th to the D note on the A string. Very cool, very clever. I LOVE that song. I actually play it on the Ukulele quite a bit, the version I play isn't really exactly what the ZZ guys are playing, but I'd like to do that one some day for sure.
