Today we are going to learn how to play "Stand By Me" in the chord melody style, if you are new to this style of Ukulele I would highly recommend that you check out our #ChordMelodyChallenge and take the 10 day crash course with this style. It has everything you need to jump start your playing in this rewarding and fun style.

This song is very famous for its instantly recognizable bass line. There aren't any actual chords or strum patterns, it is just a very cool arpeggio line based on the the bass line so what we did is start with the bass line and where we can use use it to connect the chords. Because the bass line isn't a full octave lower it almost sounds like two melodies working together. We start of the arrangement with the bass groove, runt through two verses and than the chorus and then we finish it up. If you want to take it back to the top the verses after the chorus you can run though the verses again and the chorus again if you would like. The original song is in the key of A but we do the tutorial in the key of G to make it a lot easier, so if you want to play with Ben E. King you need to throw a capo on the 2nd fret.

Heh Tyler, My "mute" isn't. I usually damp the strings with my fretting hand, but you are clearly doing it all with the right hand alone. I'm not getting it yet. Any tips? Or do you have another video somewhere that goes over that technique in more detail.

Also looking for a video on muting and also the plucky little up-strum thing that happens after the mute? No idea what that is called 😄 definitely would love a video

Linda

Hi Linda, it is working for me, strange it isn’t working for you? Send me your email and I’ll email it to you please. Are you having trouble with any other tabs?
