Today we are learning how to play "Play that Funky Music" by Wild Cherry on the Ukulele. This is one of the essential funk songs and a great one to learn if you are interested in this style of music. You will HAVE TO know how to count music in 16ths. To do so it is 1 e & a 2 e & a 3 e & a 4 e & a with downs on the numbers and &s and up strums on the es and as. If you need extra help with this idea here is a video on how to county music https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5x-A...

This song has two guitars one is playing funky riffs over an extremely funky strum pattern. Funk doesn't have a lot of chord changes all the time but rather they vamp, or play one chord, with danceable riffs and strum patterns. This song is a Verse, Pre-Chorus and Chorus and we will break each piece down in detail including each part of the song. Really take your time with the strum patterns, once you feel like you can get them slow try and play along with the actual recording recording on youtube, spotify or wherever you have the song to help cement the timing as well as work on the nuances like the dynamics and the small changes in volume that help give a song like this character.

I just luuuve those 9th chords ;)

Sure that's a Bflat9? I mean, of course it is, 😁but what is the root, from what chord shape is it? Thanks 😉

None of chords actually have the roots. The dominant 9 chord is a 5 note chord so we are going to have a leave a not on the floor, the Root and 5th are the least important tonally. The Bb9 comes from the G7 shape with the root pushed up a whole stop to get the 9 in there.
