Last day of our 10 day blues challenge, and we are going to use it to play a full blown 12 bar solo. This video is designed to be approachable for anyone, nothing too difficult, but still tasty and will sound great. There is a free backing track you can download from our Patreon site, you'l see a direct link pinned in the first comment.
The first phrase is used to build a motif. That means we are going to use a riff that uses a rhythm pattern repeated that helps to create something your ear can latch onto. The 1st and 3rd bars are the same but 2nd and 4th are different. That slight variation creates interest but stays true to the motif. The phrase ends on the E note and the second phrase on the B note. This is looking at resolution. Resolution is the note you use to close your phrase or your solo. This works best when you choose a note that is both in the chord you are playing over and the scale. The E and B notes are both in the E blues scale and the E7 chord, that is why the resolution works the best.
You'll see the same thing over the A7 chord, we are playing the E note and the G note, both notes that are in the Blues scale and the A7 chord. Targeting those chord tones make it so your scale and your chords work together, keeping it tasty!
Rhythm wise we are playing 1/4, 1/8 and 1/8 note triplets, nothing to fancy. By the time we get to the 1/8 note triplet you'll see how much energy they bring to the solo and they really build it up and give it life when we get to the 7th bar of the solo. The turnaround will really follow the chord tone concept as well and we will finish with a classic turnaround that we have used a couple times. Enjoy!
