Today we are going to learn how to play the shuffle. The shuffle is a common and classic rhythm variation that is played in blues music. It is done when the person playing the rhythm moves the 5th interval up to the 6th, and then up to the flat 7th, or more commonly written as the b7th. Having said that many shuffles don't go all the way to the b7th and many use elaborate rhythms much more complicated than this basic groove that we are learning today. Today we are just getting that basic delta blues acoustic old school style shuffle down.

We will also work on triplet fills expanding on what we did yesterday. The triplet fill is great to really spice up the rhythm and we are going to be playing around with the 3rd interval. The blues chords have a major 3rd while the blues scale has a minor 3rd, so hammering on from the minor 3rd to the major 3rd is a classic sound in the blues world.

Rumi

Is it possible to do the shuffle when I am doing the B7 bar?

Tyler Austenfeld

Yep, the same way you would do the shuffle like the A7 with the shuffle happening on the E string.

Rumi

cool, thanks!
