Today we are going to play some soul music. I am going to take 5 basic chord progressions that you are familiar with and transform them into professional sounding soul rhythm, the kind of session work you might hear from legends like Steve Cropper, David Williams, Bobby Womack, Curtis Mayfield or even the great Jimi Hendrix (think Little Wing) who took a lot of his inspiration for playing soul music from the great Curtis Mayfield. Listen to the song "People Get Ready" as recorded by The Impressions. From the 38 second mark to the 47th second there is a rhythm piece that is laid down by Curtis where you can hear Jimi Hendrix, you can hear the influence, you can hear Little Wing. A ton of his playing came from there. Each of the 5 different pieces will be played as a basic strumming piece then walked through the transformation to the final product and then after that it is played over a laid back swing beat at 61 BPM so you can hear it in the context of a song as well.
