This episode is especially notable for being the very last piece of Trek that Gene Roddenberry had a direct hand in, as the health issues that would kill him three years later forced him into retirement. And it's perhaps fitting that it's an episode whose major reputation is feeling like it's straight out of the original series, maybe a bit too much. Maurice Hurley, who took over as main show runner at this point, didn't think very much of it, as on top of not being happy with the script there were also issues with not having enough time to cast and make props to anyone's satisfaction. Though given the quality of his own scripts, I really don't take that very seriously, and I've always had a bit of a soft spot for this one, portraying a truly alien mindset in a way that it doesn't often feel like Trek does despite the setup crying out for it.

Incidentally, I just finished The Autobiography of James T. Kirk, and I highly recommend it. The way it weaves so many disparate pieces of canon into a singular, thematically consistent story is incredible to see, and ultimately adds a lot to a rewatch. Plus, it casually reveals the Sailor Scout girl from Court Martial is gay, so I can have fun imagining the right kind of people getting impotently angry over that.

Yeah, I heard this episode was Roddenberry’s last bow as it were. Again, as you note, the episode does get the static for being too derivative of the original series, and my thought is, “So it feels like an original series episode. That’s not the worst thing in the world.” And if that’s the harshest thing one can say about it, I see no major problem with the episode. Like Jess said, it is a highlight that there’s no real villain. Nice to hear the episode’s one you have a soft spot for.

It is kind of sad that the Sailor Scout outfit makes such an impression that I knew instantly whom you were referring to.
