There's some pretty interesting adaptation choices going on here, and I'll try my best to keep it understandable since it gets a bit complicated. DC Comics' first character named The Sandman was a superhero in the 1930s who used a bag of magic sand, which Gaiman integrated into his story by saying it was Dream's sand which this guy had gotten hold of during his imprisonment, before it eventually ended up with Constantine. He also brought his wife along as his mission control...and their names were Hector and Lyta Hall. So the comic reveals that Brute and Glob, the nightmares who the show replaces with the new character Gault, had kidnapped both of them in a pocket dream world and later added Jed as the requisite kid sidekick that every old timey superhero needs. So as part of the show's ongoing removal of its connections to the DC Universe, this time Hector and Lyta are just a regular couple, with Lyta now being Rose's friend as the reason they're part of this story, and Jed himself is the Sandman in his dream world. I'm sure it couldn't have been easy to work all this out, but the result is beautifully clean and seamless, and I'd even say an improvement on the original, with Gault alone providing a lot more depth with her more sympathetic motivation.

I figured Jed’s dream would have some type of connection to the greater DC universe in the comic. My one thought was that there was a spot you could have still worked in the DC characters in a way that made sense. By that I mean, the rogues gallery that Jed would fight as the Sandman, at least as shown on the screens of the televisions, could have been notable DC villains. But given the general disconnect between the source material and the DC universe, I can see how Gaiman would not want to have any connection between the two for this show. Plus, I’d imagine the rights would cost a hefty sum.
