oh boy, the start to a new season and the arrival of a new companion

Ryan

Mary Tamm took quite a bit of convincing to take this role, as she viewed previous companions as little more than damsels in distress. And so we got the treat of the Doctor having the tables turned on him, as now he's the more "human" of the team going up against a Time Lady with none of the character development he's gotten since Unearthly Child. And Fred (or Romana if you prefer) quickly became one of the most popular classic series companions, up there with Sarah Jane, and Tamm ultimately reprised the role in a few audio stories, though sadly she died shortly afterward at just 62 before any more could be done with the role.

producer Graham Williams had hoped to convince Elizabeth Sladen to return as Sarah Jane for this series, that would have been interesting but Sladen declined, love the set design for this story, not bad for a studio bound story, look closely and you might spot a cut on Tom Baker's lip

"That be what we call scringe stone, sir. ... You hangs a bit of that around your neck and you won't never suffer from the scringes no matter how cold it be. You'll just stay as supple and fresh as a little old babbit in the Sun-time, sir. And that be a proven fact.", Unstoffe. "The Ribos Operation" I really like Mary Tamm as Romana / Romanadvoratrelundar! She appeared on TV in a bunch of stuff over the years and it was a delight to see her in them. Here she is in a radio studio demonstrating some passages in old English from Chaucer in a TV documentary about the English language. https://youtu.be/UZ5UUOtkAX0?t=141 And, aren't Unstoffe and Garron great! Robert Holmes writes fantastic two-person teams - remember Jago and Litefoot from "The Talons of Weng-Chiang". With Romana and Unstoffe and Garron and the over-the-top Graff Vynda-K, and a cracking plot, this story is one of my fourth Doctor favourites.

I normally watch each Who reaction twice: once when it is released and then again the day before the next one. But you had so much fun with these two episodes, and I enjoy the story so much, I watched the reaction again almost immediately. Thanks!
