Season 1 got some complaints about its lack of exploration of Sabine's Mandalorian heritage, with her time as an Imperial cadet being treated as more important. So this episode was a real treat. And if you're wondering, no, you haven't forgotten any appearances from Fenn Rau in The Clone Wars, where he never appeared despite being recognized by Rex. The battle Kanan talks about seeing him in is a reference to a comic.

The Protectors is an episode I didn't care for too much when I first saw it, but it seems to grow on me every time I see it, think where the story goes from here, plus the Mandalorian helped it out for me, but the differences of perspective in Kanaan and Sabine is great for sure, really enjoy it now. Legends of the Lasat I have always loved though. Takes a while for us to get to Zeb episodes but they are great! We get Hondo, another look at the force outside of how the Jedi interpret it, an interesting message with the idea of the child, fool and warrior and a look at the history of the Lasat (as well as Zeb's past), love how there is an ancient way to use the bo-rifle. Zeb and Ezra's relationship has come so far too! And then yeah, that final segment is gorgeous, from the music to the artistry of the star cluster, but also Kanaan and Ezra realising that Zeb is probably channeling the force too which is awesome. Looking forwards to next week but honestly rest of the season from this point onwards I really enjoy

Hondo proves once more that he's a chaotic neutral character! :D

Come on now, the best character in the show is Chopper, we all know that! ;) That planet half blown to bits sums up the Mandalorians perfectly! We hear a little bit more about Sabine's family, so she's Clan Wren which is a cadet branch of House Viszla which we've all heard before by this point! And yes all Viszla's it seems have a bit of theatricality to them. I do like Kanan wanting to approach this problem in a more peaceful manner, especially considering what they did to Hera. Revenge is not the Jedi way, and he's acting like a Jedi here. He does however punch Fenn Rau in the face later, which I believe is something we haven't seen (except perhaps Anakin railing on Clovis - but Anakin was never a Jedi...). The Battle Of Mygeeto that Kanan mentions, featured in his comic at the time and Fenn Rau is also seen in the comic fighting in the skies above. Also the marking on the top of Rau's helmet stems from a very early design placed on Boba Fett's helmet for Empire Strikes Back when that was getting developed. There is an amazing decal (painted by Sabine of course!) on the cockpit of Hera's A-Wing in this episode, have a look Jess and see what you think! Why would Hera have a pic of Kanan on her ship? :D https://lumiere-a.akamaihd.net/v1/images/concord-dawn-concept-art_13_8b15dcb2.jpeg Onto 2x14, and its one of the more mystical episodes of Rebels, there is a few of them dotted around the series (one coming very soon). You feel for Zeb here and the way he starts off by alienating himself from the other Lasats onboard, as he's ashamed he couldn't protect his people when they needed him, even if he did the best he could. I love how they play with the ideas of the force in this episode, with mentions of it coming under different names and the Lasats calling it the Ashla (which, btw was Ahsoka's original name when she was in development (and she also uses it in her novel and Tales Of The Jedi when she was in hiding) and that in turn came from George Lucas's original term for the lightside of the force (Bogan being the darkside)). That background of the imploded star cluster is gorgeous, and brings a rare thing we don't see too much of in Star Wars - awe - which tended to be more of a thing Star Trek used to be good for. The music too is inspired by Phillip Glass, however to me its more like a late Beethoven string quartet, and is something we just don't hear in Star Wars. People always hark on about Clone Wars (and Bad Batch) about how amazing the later series look, and they are correct; but somehow, some of the designs and especially backgrounds in Rebels stick out for me more. I'd love for them to revisit this style some day and give it the bigger budget that Clone Wars, Tales and Bad Batch enjoy, to really see what they can do with it. We've seen other styles too with Visions, so hopefully one day Rebels style will come around again. Love that once Zeb starts to believe in the prophecy and begins to open himself up to the idea of the part he'll play, the force begins to flow through him, guiding him to Lira San, and I love that Kanan nods to Ezra for them to help Zeb focus the force, and find the path through the cluster. When they find the planet, you can see Zeb now feels more at peace and frees his guilt, knowing that his people survive and are free of Imperial tyranny. Beautiful episode.

I think season 1 is a great introduction to the series, and sets things up that the later series can flesh out a bit more. Of course if you were watching it when the series was running, I could see why some would think that Sabine's Mandalore stuff was underdeveloped; but like with all things, this series does get round to it and fleshes out everyone's story by the time it finishes.

Two excellent episodes of Rebels today. Start with the first one. I had a small laugh at you encouraging the rebels to employ Ziggy-zags, as you called them, or as I call them, Serpentine maneuvers, after our dear beloved Peter Falk. Yes, it’s great the team-up of Kanan and Sabine. It does stand out how both try to approach what happened to Hera; Kanan wanting the peaceful approach, and Sabine wanting blood for blood. Given the planet was Concord Dawn, I found myself agreeing with the peaceful approach. Jango Fett was brought up on Concord Dawn and he was a very honorable man, thus it stands to reason that the others from there would be the same. By the same token, I am not unsympathetic to Sabine’s bloodthirst, her sense of justice. Kevin McKidd was great as Fenn Rau. Pretty much all Mandalorians have a flair for the dramatic. It’s one of the reasons why they get along with the Sith so well; theatricality is a shared trait. Of course, the Sith are the reigning Kings and Queens of having the flair for the dramatic. Onto the second episode. First, great to see Hondo again. I love how even when he sells the Shady Bunch down the river, you still love him, and are thinking, “Why can’t I ever stay mad at that avaricious reprobate?” Zeb is my favorite of the Shady Bunch, thus it’s delightful to see him get some focus, and allow Steve Blum to remind us of his skill as an actor. It got me in the heart, your getting emotional for him. It is a shock to him to see he’s not the only one left after spending the time thinking he was. There’s that line from the third Pirates of the Carribean, “You know the problem with being the last of anything, by and by, there be none left at all.” The entire ending of the second episode is one of the most astonishing things, and your reaction was perfect. You said it all looked very Van Gogh. I believe I’ve read Van Gogh was an inspiration for the look of the animation in the gorgeous climactic scene. Kevin Kiner delivered with the music which in this scenario is very much inspired by the great Philip Glass. I see a comparison has been made to Beethoven's string quartets. I had a similar thought, only my mind went to Mahler’s Quartet for Piano and Strings in A minor. Also, John Williams with some of his more strings dominant works, such as his masterful scores for Schindler’s List. Though not quite number one in terms of favorite themes and pieces that Kevin has composed for Rebels, it is very close to it. Everything about the second episode’s ending was beautiful as you said, as was your reaction to it. I could see it in your eyes how it got to you, Jess, thus it did not bother me you didn’t get too overtly emotional, that and I understood you were recovering from the surgery. Nevertheless, as I said, your eyes conveyed everything, they said it all. Thank you so, so much for a beautiful reaction, Jess.

It never bothered me Sabine’s Mandalorian background not getting explored much in the first season. One, it is an ensemble show, there’s a lot of juggling the focus, and establishing everyone. Two, you know as the seasons go on, there’s a chance it will get touched on as it was here, and it all ends up great.

Thomas Corp

That’s why I often make distinctions between favorite characters and best characters. It’s like James Bond where favorite and best are not necessarily mutually exclusive. With Kanan decking Rau, like I said before, the Jedi have a hit the pillow philosophy. You just make sure it doesn’t go beyond that by asking, “Feel better?” they reply, “...Yeah, I do.” and you say, “Good.” With Zeb, there’s lots of survivor’s guilt, for sure. No matter how he did his best, that’s still going to eat him up. Rewatching that climactic scene with the glorious music, I sobbed some from being reminded how beautiful it was.

Yes Hera is the best character in the show!! Thank you for appreciating her the way you do as I feel a lot of people undervalue her.

Thomas Corp

I mean, I freely admit my favorite of the main crew in Rebels is Zeb. And franchise-wide, when it comes to favorites, my preferences are generally toward the Sith and Imperial characters. But Hera is an amazing character. You’re right, it is nice to see Hera receive love, and to see Jess appreciate Hera as she has.

I've just started watching Young Justice, where the actress plays Black Canary. And she's absolutely awesome at it.

Thomas Corp

Vanessa Marshall as Black Canary? Well, goddamn, that sounds awesome!

Saltire

Yeah thats a good way of putting it with characters. I wouldn't personally pick a favourite among the bunch here as I like them all. What I will say though, is that Chopper is my favourite Star Wars droid; I love that little maniac! :D We've seen Obi-Wan fight a few times using his arms and legs. He very much likes his kicks when fighting Jango on Kamino, but in his series, adopts a more Jiu Jitsu style since his kicks won't be as good in his mid-40's (I know how he feels, I used to get vertical on my kicks, and can't get waist height these days!). Kanan just smacks Fenn however, perhaps thats some of his more outlawish nature still coming to the fore, despite him being very Jedi-like this episode. In the second episode, those whole scenes with the star cluster are so well done, from the animation and art, to the music, its all beautifully executed. Its not just a stellar Zeb episode, but a stellar Rebels one too.

Hey! It WAS a a septoplasty. Do you still have your stints in your nose? I saved mine for sentimantal reasons like I saved my pre-braces teeth molds, lol. Couldn't believe how HUGE they were when my doctor took them out.

Good seeing Kevin McKidd brought into the series with Fenn Rau. When I first watched the series, I thought he also voiced Agent Kallus too; however I found out that is another British actor in David Oweloyo, and I adore his diction in the series, he gives Kallus such strong authority. I do almost feel a bit for Kallus to this point in terms of strategy; he's very good at his job, but ends up looking like General Grievous in Clone Wars as he comes up against such a talented crew. Speaking of voices, Steve Blum is just awesome, another great voice artist. I was rewatching some Jess Mandalorian season 3 scenes last night and caught her reaction to Zeb, and Steve voicing him once more, both felt so familiar and warming, like putting on a new pair of comfy slippers (and I have just recently done that!). He also voiced a really terrifying stormtrooper in the latest series of Visions, and I didn't recognise him until I saw the cast list at the end, so had to listen back to pick him back up. I can definitely see the Van Gogh 'Starry Night' inspiration for the star cluster, and that painting is very dreamlike, just like the events we see with Zeb and the crew here and the mysterious nature of the force thats guiding him. I haven't heard much Mahler stuff outside of his epic symphonies, only some of his more intimate piano with voice, quieter pieces, so will look some of those out as I've not listened to the great man in ages. As I type this I'm listening to a few themes from season three, and one of which you referenced the other day Thomas. ;)

Saltire

Vanessa Marshall in anything is awesome! Some of you may remember Kyle Katarn from the old Jedi Knight games (Dark Forces II is still one of my favourite Star Wars games), and the developers here definitely took a bit of inspiration from Kyle when they developed Kanan (an outcast Jedi, who carries a blaster and has a pauldron on their right shoulder); and in some of them, he travels with a pilot named Jan Ors, who is played by dear Vanessa! That had to be a factor in casting her to play another pilot here in Rebels!

Thomas Corp

David Oweloyo is great as Kallus. It does suck for Kallus getting outdone by the crew, despite his legitimate skill. That was indeed a wonderful moment when Jess reacted to Zeb in The Mandalorian. Comfy slippers are a good analogy. Hope you enjoy the Mahler listening if you get to it. Meantime, glad to hear your enjoyment of listening to the season three themes, the one in particular. Like I said before, can’t wait to hear it again.

Thomas Corp

Yeah, Chopper is certainly a psychotic little maniac. There is sometimes pragmatism like Obi-Wan's fight with Jango seeing as he had no weapons during the one part of the fight. Of course, it can backfire like when he kicked Grievous, and screamed as if to say, “WHY did I think that was a good idea!?” And yeah, in his own show when he’s pushing fifty, the kicks aren’t going to be as effective. I’ve had a bum knee since my early-mid-twenties, so I’m not looking forward to that getting worse. Probably like you say, Kanan’s outlaw side came out. That, and Rau did go after Hera, so I’d say Kanan’s allowed a free swing. Yes, the second episode is one of the best Rebels episodes. A work of art, the episode is.

Thomas Corp

Oooh, yes. I do remember Kyle Katarn. My brother and I love those games. I remember Vannesa as Jan. She was great. No doubt that character helped get the role of Hera.

Saltire

Yeah I forgot he kicks Grievous as well - I mean he is the GOAT, but what the hell was he thinking there!?! :D
