Yes, a solid start to this show. Jeffrey and Lauren both were excellent in their scenes of Negan and Maggie renewing old... acquaintances. I was relieved with the writing of the tension being very much still there. As Negan himself described, “Vengeful thoughts that I thought you had put to bed, CLEARLY you have woken the hell up.” And I like that the show highlights that neither Negan nor Maggie are innocents, particularly with Negan making the salient point of maybe they’re all bad guys at this point, and even asks how many husbands and fathers Maggie has killed. And although Maggie, I would contend, wins the argument by noting that what Negan did is NEVER going to be something that can be put to bed, she tellingly does not directly answer the question. I would also argue that you yourself made the great observation that Maggie’s killing the husbands and fathers that she has is VASTLY different to what Negan did to Glenn. You were on my mind when we saw the flashbacks to the scene with Glenn. Yeah, Jess, that hurt seeing that again. Concerning the plot, I too had heard something about Herschel being kidnapped. Whether it was rumor or perhaps a press blurb, I’m not sure, but I heard that and thought it was plausible. The question you had as to why Maggie would seek out Negan, of all people, was shared by me. Finding out that the man responsible is a former savior makes sense. I liked Negan’s scenes with Ginny. I too assume that whatever happened with Negan and the marshalls likely has something to do with Annie and his kid. And since Negan conspicuously sidesteps Maggie’s inquiry about them, I surmise something bad happened on that front. Speaking of the marshalls, Perlie is interesting thus far. I was unfamiliar with Gaius Charles and him being in Friday Night Lights. When you said he was in that, combined with my knowing how much you love that show, it made me even more interested in keeping an eye on this character who seems to be quite a pious vulture of the law. I’m not bothered by bugs all that much, and I’m with you and Negan upon seeing the roaches. Which brings us to the Croat. I knew in advance that the highly underrated Željko Ivanek would be in this. I did not know who he was going to be playing. Once I found out, I said, “Željko Ivanek is the villain of the piece? WELL! Hot DIGGITY dog!!” I love the buildup to the Croat. First, how Negan commented on how the guy stood out to him. And considering Negan wasn’t exactly a pillar of sanity back then, (And still kind of isn’t, if I’m being honest.) for him to say that this guy made an impression, batshit-wise, that speaks volumes. Then to see Željko in his debut scene as the Croat, especially when he counted how many stories the one guy fell, made me go, “I think I’m going to LOVE this guy!” I mean, he’s doubtlessly a monstrous individual, don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying I’m rooting for him. I am going to be LIVING for the theatre, however. Again, a solid opener. And yes, nice visible night scenes which was appreciated. This was a great reaction, Jess, thank you.

Gaius Charles actually quit acting for a while to become a priest, though he went back to it after a couple years. That forced the last couple Friday Nights Lights seasons into some awkward storytelling to keep us updated on his character offscreen.
