You did say this show can get deeply unsettling at times. This episode fit the bill and then some. The cast in this was great. The leads were terrific. Daniel Portman was great. I loved him as Podrick in Game of Thrones, and thought he was great here. Your beloved John Hannah, likewise, was great. You were on my mind upon seeing him, given your comments saying you liked him when he popped up in The Last of Us earlier in the year, combined with how you’ve said the nineties The Mummy is one of your favorite films. And Monica Dolan was superb in this episode. You raise excellent points about the commentary of people’s, shall we say, interest in true crime. One can certainly make many arguments about it. I know my dad had a spell of being interested in reading about certain real-life crimes/cases, and my dad was never much of a reader. My brother’s always been big into those unsolved mysteries type shows. I, myself, would say that I have intellectual curiosity about it. More curiosity on human nature. What leads someone to do such horrific things. I tend not to delve TOO deeply into any of it. Don't particularly care for the abyss gazing long into me as Nietzsche said. Of course, I’m big into horror, and as you well know, I have a great passion for villainous characters in stories. But it is like you say, there is a detached element in its fictionality. Your observations on Pia really getting interested in diving into the past case were shared by me. Considering what a sick man I am, I’m not one to judge, but the way Pia was pushing to dive into the case seemed to be cause for alarm, even by my standards. I also shared your thoughts that something more would be unburied as the investigation went on. Whether it would be unburied traumas and/or truths was not entirely clear. Then following the one line said in the hospital, it started to piece itself together, even before I actually saw the revelations. In the end, I think Davis was largely exploited. Trauma, after all, can be a most precious commodity in the entertainment industry. As to why he went along, despite his, I would imagine, overwhelming grief or trauma, I could see it being his way of retaining some type of control over how the story was told. Though the allure of the sizable amount of money he would get from it was perhaps a considerably attractive idea to him. Certainly, the town seemed ecstatic about it, and it attracted people who eat true crime stuff up like kibble, complete with the novelty masks, which like you, I didn’t notice right away. All in all, this episode made an impression. Thank you for this reaction to Black Mirror, the reaction prior, and a very pleasant and enjoyable evening. Well, pleasant and enjoyable are odd ways to put it, like you said. Nonetheless, your reactions were most appreciated. No worries about your fidgeting due to the leg cramp. It did not detract from my enjoyment of the reaction in any way. Again, thank you for the terrific reactions, Jess.
