If Leela's departure feels rushed, it's because it wasn't actually intended for most of the writing process on this story. Louise Jameson didn't want to stay on the show anymore after her favorite writer left for Blake's 7, and they had to squeeze out the best reason for a departure they could manage, despite her never having any kind of vibes with the guy. This also resulted in the weirdly sullen tone of the reveal of another K9 until Tom Baker breaks the fourth wall and grins at us.

Graham Williams was hopeful that Louise would change her mind about leaving and stay on for the next season, it wasn't until recording started that the scene was written

Currently there's over 40 full cast Big Finish audio stories featuring the 4th Dr and Leela. As you say it felt like she left too soon & the Big Finish producers definitely wanted to rectify that.

I shouldn't be able to access this? I'm only on early reaction tier not full reaction, though when I click the link to your site I can't watch it anyway. Strange that this post is visible to me though.

After Susan, Vicki, and Jo, this is the fourth abrupt departure of a classic series companion to get married to a guy she's just met -- and certainly the least convincing one of them all.

After Doctor Who, Louise went on to co-star in The Omega Factor with James Hazeldine about a journalist who possesses untapped psychic powers that bring him to the attention of a group of scientists who comprise Department 7, a secret government organization which investigates paranormal phenomena and the potential of the human mind. Louise plays a physicist Dr. Anne Reynolds who is one of the members of Department 7. One series was made of ten episodes which has been released on DVD. (Not to be confused with the New York Times bestseller of the same name)

louise jameson would have preferred a more heroic death, one where she would have joined the short list of companions who'd been killed off, definitely that than fall in love with a guy she's barely interacted with

WORST. COMPANION. EXIT. EVER. In rewatches you can just about see that Louise and Christopher Tranchell try to introduce some moments of tenderness between the characters during the story, but Leela's exit really does comes out of the blue for everyone. In the commentary track, Louise said that she snuck her own real dog into the rehearsal room and Bosie was substituted for the K9 prop and John Leeson. During rehersals for the final emotional scene with Leela, Bosie lifted up his little paw. :(

On the other hand we have another sighting of the "Live and Let Die" control panel prop - hooray!

I just watched Omega Factor for the first time last month (as an American, I'd never heard of it). Pretty much binged it in one night. IT WAS SOOO GOOD! (Definitely recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it, especially if you're into X-Files sort of stuff)

Nicole Mazza

It's still my fanon that Leela ACTUALLY stayed for Rodan, because they totally DID have vibes (at least for me), but she said it was Andred in the heat of the moment.

Josef Schiltz

Ten episodes in one night. Must've got you hooked! I don't understand, however, what the comment above your own is about. To me, it doesn't correlate.

Andrew Vignaux

Thanks for reminding me that Vicki is in this group as well. I sometimes overlook her reason for leaving the TARDIS crew because it happens out-of-sight of the existing video recordings. I love "The Myth Makers". I think I'd rather have some of that back than bits of "The Daleks' Masterplan".

Nicole Mazza

Yeah, pretty sure there was a nap in there, but otherwise it was a day off, so I just kept watching each episode, wanting more each time! (Which reminds me, I definitely need to listen to the Big Finish Omega Factor stories at some point, too)

A really good series. The novel based on the series is great. Bought it at the time. Not sure if it's available. Maybe secondhand.
