Before this episode, the B-Wing had pretty much been seen as the "loser" ship of the franchise. They notoriously were hardly ever seen in action during their first appearance at the Battle of Endor due to the design not playing well with the optical effects of the time, and hardly ever got any time to shine afterward. But here they finally got their due with a full backstory and signature weapon, plus legendary pilot Hera getting the honor of being the first to ever fly one.

Hera and Sabine are my two favorite characters too. I loved these two episodes.

Yes, Wings Of The Master is always such a joyous tearjerker. And the music this episode is wonderful, especially hearing Hera's Theme for the first time in all its glory, and that stirring piece when she is putting the B-Wing through its paces (and is a nod to the score for The Rocketeer). How much of a dick do you have to be to stop people getting food supplies in whilst you starve them. The Empire is the worst! Its such a lovely, romantic episode about following your dream, even in trying circumstances. I had a B-Wing as a kid along with the Millenium Falcon and the Ewok Village, good times. Quarrie is a lot of fun, voiced by the same person who does Cad Bane, Count Dooku and Ziro The Hutt, what a talent Corey Burton is. One of the reasons in Star Wars lore that Admiral Ackbar, and other Mon Cals, appear at the major battles like Endor (and Scarif) was because it was always thought that Mon Calamari's built a lot of the newer ships for the Rebellion; and I think Quarrie is introduced here to solidify that idea and he may have been the chief shipwright for the Rebels. Always brings a lump to my throat when he says to Hera on her flying "I just hammered it together young pilot... you made it soar!". And now with Phoenix Leader killed earlier in the episode, Hera is now Pheonix Squadron Leader. Well deserved, she's the best! Ketsu is a new character for the show. Love her ship, The Shadowcaster, and its original design was going to be for a major arc in Clone Wars as Ventresses ship. There is only 2 years age difference between Sabine and Ezra, yet she feels like a decade older than him; but then I suppose women mature faster than cheeky young pups like Ezra! To put this into perspective though, Sabine was bounty hunting BEFORE she joined the Ghost crew, so she must've only been about 13/14 doing that with Ketsu! They learn things fast in the Star Wars universe! Chopper's maniacal laugh when he disassembles Ketsu's main gun, is always a hoot. And him meeting up with that other legend R2 at the end, is great! Speaking of R2, in this episode he was supposed to have been the courier instead of the Gonk droid, but the developers then had a change of heart, as they felt R2 and Chopper teaming up, would take away from the story of Sabine and Ketsu's history, so the remnants of that idea were used at the end, when Chopper hands off the Gonk droid to R2.

Yeah you only ever saw them at Endor; will need to check The Battle Of Scarif again to see if there are B-Wings in that now. I had one as a kid so have always had a fondness for them, even if TIE Interceptors are my fave Star Wars ship.

Burton has an especially fun role in Kingdom Hearts as Yensid, whose maybe-sort-of counterpart soul (I seriously doubt even the game developers have ever had a real handle on how the lore works) is voiced by Christopher Lee, so you get to hear both Dookus together as kind of the same guy.

That poor droid was just doing his job :(

As you say, Jess, we are THRIVING with the episodes today. I like how the opening reminds us that the Empire is a formidable opponent. Yes, the Hera focus is great. I laugh at how in her absence, Ezra tries to call dibs on co-pilot, and Chopper yells back, “Over my dead fucking relays, buster!” Hera shows her mettle at arriving on the planet. You encourage her even though she’s more falling than flying, and it leads me to note, “But Jess, she’s falling with style. Besides which, she looks good doing it. When I try to drive anything, it looks nasty.” Quarrie was entertaining. I hear the name and note, “As in Ralph McQuarrie. Good touch.” A big highlight of the episode is Hera relaying some of her backstory. Then of course, there’s her being a beautiful leaf on the wind in that B-Wing, complete with Kevin Kiner providing our dear Hera with a lovely theme. Your joy seeing Hera soar was beautiful to behold, Jess. Similarly, I loved seeing your reaction when Hera showed up to wreck those whores, as you put it. I appreciate you describing Zeb being a big old sweetheart, and you living for it. Such a heartwarming moment when Hera receives the promotion. Then there’s the Sabine episode. I do appreciate you saying that there is nothing wrong with being an introvert, though in my case, I'm close to being a hermit to the point the Emperor would probably seem like a social butterfly by comparison. It is nice to learn more of Sabine’s backstory. Ketsu was a cool character. I laugh too hard when Ketsu has Chopper, more specifically, how Sabine’s rushing to get him out of danger, leading me to deadpan, “I’d be more concerned with the little menace brutally murdering your old friend, than her doing anything to him.” That got me, seeing your reaction to that poor droid. It continues to warm the heart seeing your growing love for the show and characters, and it’s making me SO emotional. And I thank you for the amazing experience thus far, and I thank you for a truly lovely reaction, Jess.

I'm pretty sure there was an older video game, I'm blanking on a name, where you get to fly the B-Wing, and it being most impressive machinary. I also seem to recall my brother expressing fondness for the B-Wing as a result of his reading Rogue Squadron books. But certainly, yes, excellent to see the B-Wing getting the focus that it got in this episode. I see the love for the TIE Interceptor, which I share. In terms of individual ships, my two favorites are the Executor and the Ebon Hawk, but the TIE Interceptor and B-Wing are great ships.

They are most impressive characters. Even though neither of them are my favorite favorites of Star Wars, they are fantastic, and it’s so great seeing them get the love that Jess has been showing them.

Love The Rocketeer. Yes, the Empire is the worst. Unfortunately, I love them far more than I should. Such is the way when I have a strong passion for villainous characters. Corey Burton is indeed a fantastic actor. I think part of Sabine’s maturity is her Mandalorian upbringing. The Mandalorians seem to place a lot of stock in raising their children to be exceptionally self-reliant/able to fend for themselves at a young age. You see this some with how Jango Fett raised Boba, particularly how Boba’s able to work and fly Slave 1 at the age of ten.

My only thought after "leaf on the wind" was "You do know that line isn't associated with very good things for the pilot?"

Anonymous

So I've been told. I've never actually seen Firefly and/or Serenity. Still a damn good line though.

Anonymous

I had a B-Wing in my fleet of ships in Star Wars Galaxies as well. Mind you there are dozens of games in which they could have appeared. My first Star Wars game was Empire Strikes Back on the old Atari console!

Oh yeah Sabine has no qualms about taking out droids to serve her goals. I'm fact we'll see her do something similar again soon. No wonder Chopper is always relatively respectful around her, he doesn't want the same fate!

Oh I've never played Kingdom Hearts but heard its a lot of fun with many characters across different franchises. Christopher Lee also played Dooku in the Clone Wars film before handing it over to Corey Burton for the series proper. Of his Star Wars voices, I think I love Ziro the best! Yeah Thomas The Rocketeer is a fun film, and this episode here in Rebels is a bit like the relationship between the Rocketeer himself and his engineer played by Alan Arkin. You could be right about Mandalorian's being taught more dangerous stuff early as we've seen, and Sabine is the most talented Mandalorian in canon, so would excel at most things she puts her thoughts into.

Oh is that where the line is from? Firefly is pretty good and potentially could have been a fun show, but the producers made a real mess of it and hence the film was the best thing we got after. Interestingly, Ketsu's VA is portrayed by Gina Torres from Firefly. We also had one of the other actors from the show playing K2 in Rogue One, which I know Jess said she loved. And yes, Quarrie is named after Ralph McQuarrie, whom Star Wars wouldn't be half as good without him or Colin Cantwell's designs. Quarrie's astromech BG-81 is also named after Bill George, who designed the B-Wing for Return Of The Jedi and even the colour scheme of the droid is due to a picture of Bill in a striped t-shirt. Love details like that, so geeky but its part of the charm of Filoni and Favreau Star Wars. I think you'd love to be someone like Moff Jerjerrod, Thomas, building the Death Star for your beloved Palpatine! :P

Ryan

This franchise is just really weird about droids. They’re clearly sentient and capable of any life they want, yet we’re expected to laugh when they’re horribly abused.

Anonymous

The line’s connected to Alan Tudyk’s character in Firefly/Serenity from what I've heard. Lots of fun Easter eggs in these shows. Being like Jerjerrod building the Death Star for my dear beloved Palpatine doesn’t sound a bad idea. I'd probably want the Death Star for myself, though. For sure I'd want that throne room with the chair that according to Ian, never worked properly, so he had to shuffle his feet to get it to move.

Anonymous

I’ve played some Kingdom Hearts, it’s good. I wish more people would see The Rocketeer. I don’t if Jess has ever seen it. It'd be her type of film, and it’s got Timothy Dalton, who I know Jess is a fan of.

Anonymous

Yes its a good film that doesn't get a lot of coverage or love. And Timothy Dalton is great in it if I remember. Perhaps on a movie list for Jess to watch it could be a choice?

Anonymous

I do remember Eric on Blind Wave went off on a long diatribe about how badly treated a lot of droids are in Star Wars, especially this time when there is prejudice against them because of the Clone Wars. There is even a scene in Return Of The Jedi with droids torturing other droids! They probably are the worst things to be in this galaxy, yet they are only what they were programmed to be, and if they are loved and looked after, then they can develop sentience and show how capable they can become, with the likes of R2 and Chopper showing this.

Anonymous

Ha I remember hearing about the chair, always fun to think about how the Emperor of the galaxy, couldn't get a chair to work for him. Reminds me of Robot Chicken when he has the builders in on the Death Star as he tries to sound menacing!

Anonymous

Again, provided Jess hasn't already seen it, but yes, it would a great film for her to react to that I'm sure she'd love.

I love how we have opposite opinions on Doctor Who (Rose is my favourite companion) but we are totally in sync with our love for Hera. I feel like she gets overlooked by other reactors and it fills my heart with joy to see that you really appreciate her. Also, the score that plays during Hera's flight of the B-Wing is called "Hera Soars." :)

Anonymous

I'll put Hera and Sabine ahead of Anakin in my own rankings every day! Hera is my favourite pilot in Star Wars, and I've really grew to appreciate Sabine a lot more on rewatches, and that astonishingly good episode in season 3.
