Nice to see K9 finally make his debut, wish the story was better though....

This is another one like Invasion of the Dinosaurs, where a pretty good script is let down by horrible effects. Tom Baker, already not a happy camper due to Phillip Hinchcliffe being fired, lost his temper in the middle of filming this one and shouted “How am I supposed to act against a fucking prawn?” I so dearly wish there was video of that.

He was also not a fan of K9, in fact he HATED him. I think the reason was the prop was very unreliable, especially early on and frequently held up shooting. He also didn't like how he had to kneel down to talk to K9 all the time and felt he became a plot device that provided cheap and easy solutions to problems the Doctor ran into. I think Tom's less harsh on the character these days, but I'm not sure.

There’s one especially notable K9 flub in this story, but I think it doesn’t come until the latter part so I’m saving an explanation.

Of course the story relies quite heavily upon the 1968 film 'Fantastic Voyage' starring the now sadly late Raquel Welch. Fantastic Voyage was the very first film that I ever saw in a cinema, so when this came up in Doctor Who nearly a decade later I recognized it instantly. What a joy to see K9! Loved the model work which was almost at a level with Space 1999 - nearly. Was it Mat Irvine?

I don't like spoilers. So knowing THE event that happens in this story, I clicked through to the download page (this is a bit pathetic) with my hand covering my eyes for who I guessed would be in the episode thumbnail. I wanted my experience of watching your reaction to seeing K9 to be as pure as possible. You did not disappoint - wonderful! Oh, and nice to see that Live and Let Die control panel prop yet again.
