Movie Schedule (First Three):

Star Trek: The Motion Picture - April 22nd

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - May 6th

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock - May 27th

I'm sorry there will be a two week gap in between the second and third movie. I will be recovering from surgery and I want to give myself enough time before jumping right back into everything.

If possible, you'll want to watch the Director's Cut of The Motion Picture. The theatrical version was infamously unfinished (the film was literally still wet at the premiere) and it wasn't properly edited or color corrected. (Also, there's a "Special Longer Version" which isn't the best one to watch either; it throws in a bunch of extra footage but wasn't done under the director's supervision.)

First, I thank you for the head’s up on the schedule. No bother about the two-week delay, Jess, you focus on recovering from the surgery; your health is more important. As to the episode, yeah, this one is not terribly well-regarded for fairly obvious reasons. You are absolutely correct on it being frustrating and tiresome, the sentiment of, “We’ve reached a utopic and peaceful society. Things such as racism is gone. But a woman being in charge?! Bwah! Preposterous! That is pure poppycock! Mass hysteria!” Your observation that the plot could have worked better sans misogyny is a shared consensus view of the fandom, particularly because there are female captains that were captains BEFORE the time of the original series. Many fans try to get around it by Janice being rejected for the reason of mentally she’s playing hockey with a warped puck. The idea is Starfleet has no rule against women as captains. It's simply Janice had splinters in the windmills of her mind that made her ineligible. A well-conceived idea. However, it’s been made apparent that misogyny was Roddenberry’s intent. Leonard Nimoy even spoke about it saying that Roddenberry’s intent was that “His goal was to prove, quote, “That women, although they claim equality, cannot really do things as well, under certain circumstances, as a man.” Like the command function, for example... What he set out to prove was that this lady, given command of the ship, would blow it. That's really what the script was about. Just that simple.” Just by reading that, you can hear Leonard’s disappointment, in fact, he raised a few objections throughout the filming of the episode and was overruled. Nichelle Nichols, likewise, expressed disappointment. By the way, Nichelle had a previous commitment, hence Uhura’s absence this episode. Credit where credit is due, Sandra Smith is genuinely very good in the episode. The bad stuff just drags it down. As to highlights, yes, it’s great that Spock and Bones clock fairly quickly something’s amiss. You said “Work!” when both were figuring things out, I was saying the same thing. Likewise, I LOVED your reaction to Sulu and Chekov standing their ground and refusing to sit by and do nothing. Yes, a lovely Sulu moment, Jess, and as I say I LOVED your reaction to it. I would have been in favor of Sulu fighting Kirk and beating the ever-loving shit out of him. That would have been grand, yes. It is frustrating how they don’t have the characters ask questions only certain people would know. For instance, Kirk should have asked, “Who rocks a beanie like no other Vulcan can?” I doubt Janice would have been aware of Spock’s iconic beanie. A small moment that I laughed at was Kirk pouring the drink out, and I said, “You couldn’t have just pounded the drink back? Who’s going to clean that up?” Thus, when you said, “Someone’s going to have to clean that up.” I laughed and said, “Right? That’s what I said.” So, although we ended with a disappointing final episode, this was a terrific reaction, Jess. It has been a most fun time revisiting the show with you, and I look forward to revisiting the films, a few in particular. Thanks again for the wonderful time, Jess.

Oh jeez, good luck with your op! Take as long as you need. Looking forward to the films though, not seen them in years.

that does bring up a good point, we will have to know which versions of TMP and TWOK to queue up on our end.

And now you see just why so many fans prefer to view the previous episode as the true finale. In fact, even back in the '80s when The Next Generation started, the fans were very embarrassed over how badly the gender politics of this one had aged and were desperately grasping at straws to explain that the episode wasn't REALLY saying that Roddenberry's vision of a Utopian future included women being legally barred from being captains. Several other parts of the franchise have freely shown female captains, including from before this time, and while it's never been explicitly stated, it's been made official canon that Lester's damaged mind imagined the whole rule after flunking a psych test, and at this point everyone's simply given up on trying to correct her. And of course it's even more painful that this was the last new Star Trek anyone saw for nearly a decade (unless you count the animated series, which a lot of people don't).

Ah. The . . . er . . . this one. Hey, but the Doctor Who episode this week had K9!

Anonymous

Yeah, that just about sums it up. Doesn't it? Though, yes, K9's a plus.

I think there's also different cuts for Star Trek VI. After that, I don't think there are any different cuts for the other films, but I could be wrong about that.

Azmat Mahmood

Yeah, like (I think?) Thomas said, it's not like The Invisible Enemy is a great story either. It's certainly not bad, but it's average at best. K9 is definitely the highlight of that story.

Ryan

The theatrical version cut out an entire supporting character, coincidentally played by later DS9 regular Rene Auberjonois.

I totally agree that the whole, "women can't be captains" plot point was very off-base, sexist, and of its time. They could easily have provided a different reason. For example, the former Captain Merik in Bread and Circuses (the episode which takes place in world resembling modern day Rome) said of Kirk, "He commands not just a spaceship, Proconsul, but a starship. A very special vessel and crew. I tried for such a command." So, starship captains are a pretty rare breed and cream of the crop. It's not easy to rise to that rank on that type of ship. Looking forward, I can't wait for your reactions to the classic crew movies. Oh, and to second the point others have made, the Director's Cut of the first movie (Star Trek The Motion Picture) is greatly preferred since it's the actual, completed movie -- albeit decades late.

Jess if it’s nose surgery, seriously take your time. Yes, this one is rather ridiculous really. I don’t get into the weeds and analyze all the things wrong with it. There’s just too much, lol, and I don’t know anyone who likes it. There are some really great episodes and really bad ones. This one is not as bad as Spock’s Brain, but it’s just “wrong” I don’t know any other way to put it.
