That's the original Joel actor Troy Baker as the sidekick James. He said it was incredibly hard to not break character and try to protect Ellie after years of being that character.

Joel calls Ellie "Baby Girl," which is what he called Sarah when she died.... Joel, in my opinion, has now fully accepted Ellie as family. Oh, and the preacher David was a teacher before... He taught kids, while seemlingly loving kids a bit too much... yikes... Also the whole "You have a daddy!" - right before they eat the dad of the girl... He´s such a creep!

A most intense episode to be sure. I share your skeptical nature, and I agree with you that from the get-go David and his community seemed off, wrong. And as the episode progressed, it became more apparent. As for the cannibalism, I had heard something about that from somewhere, so it wasn’t a surprise, per se. Even so, I had a similar thought process to you in putting it together. And when David attempted to justify it, I was saying, “I just got a call from a group called the Donner Party. They think you’re fucked in the head, pal.” Yes, massive kudos to Scott Shepherd in his performance as David. He tends to play unlikeable characters, and this was definitely one of his more loathsome characters. Sidenote, I found it amusing you timed David on the ten seconds. I do like Troy Baker for his voice work, particularly his work as the Joker, especially for how it’s in a similar vein to Mark Hamill’s iconic portrayal, and it was good to see him here. Though I've not played the game, I am aware of he was Joel in the game. I was not aware of the one behind the scenes tidbit that I see Ryan commented on. Makes sense, though. Regarding the needle scenes, by the way, in answer to your question to us, my weekend was uneventful, quiet, for the most part. I'm no medical expert, but I seriously doubt Ellie was doing things entirely right with administering the medicine. I had to look away myself at that part. I was yelling, “HRRRRGGHH!! GOD!!! DAMN IT!!!” I also had a similar reaction to you when Joel stabbed the one guy in the kneecap. Albeit I was more dramatic about it, probably because I already have a bum knee. That part I yelled, “Jesus, Mary, and Joseph!! FUCK me!!!” Yeah, the scene of Joel torturing the guy was quite the scene. I LOVED the fury Pedro Pascal put into his line delivery. As you note, Joel is ruthless; easy to call him a bad man. But that’s ok, it’s like Rust said in True Detective, “World needs bad men. We keep the other bad men from the door.” I also defended Joel when the guy protested Joel killing his comrade. My logic being that unless I missed something, Joel never promised either gentleman they would live, hence no word was broken. I knew that would get you when poor Mr. Ed got shot. Yeah, horses do not do well in this genre. It's hard to call it a fun part of the reaction. It was, however, a highlight of the reaction, your growing dread, discomfort, and disgust at the gradual realization of David’s true nature. I had similar feelings. Further proof you’re a better person than I am is that you were significantly more horrified by Ellie killing David, or perhaps a more accurate description would be that you were more concerned for Ellie that she had to do that. Me, I thought that the scene of Ellie hacking away at David’s face, striking him down with ALL of her hatred until past the point where he’s dead is certainly one of the most satisfying moments of the show thus far. I was going, “Oh, SHIT!! OK!! I mean, it’s not my birthday till next month. But this a terrific gift seeing this scene!” Bella Ramsey did an amazing job with the primal rage and body language in that scene. After it was done, I sounded like Palpatine, saying, “You did well, Ellie. He was too sanctimonious and disgusting to be kept alive. Besides which, it is only natural. He claimed everything happens for a reason, and his insistence on keeping you alive for his dark desires leading to his own mortal demise just proves the point. And now he has hell to look forward to.” It’s so great when Joel and Ellie reunite, and he calls her baby girl. That gets you right in the heart. Like you say, he’s going to have to be there to help her get through the trauma of what happened. All in all, this was a fantastic reaction, Jess. Thank you.

As a huge fan of the game, watching the show has been very interesting for me. Some of the things they have done has been an undoubted improvement. They have also made some bone-headed mistakes in my opinion, and they haven't shown enough "little things", as well in some instances. I have refrained from commenting too much on the specific episode reactions because I feel that I have to wait until the finale to do so. That way all the story is done, people can't complain about being spoiled, etc. And I don't have to speculate on what the filmmakers are going to do with X or Y moment that I know is coming up, etc. What I can say, though, is that this episode was very good. It did a very good job addressing a very key portion of the game. Yet AGAIN, though, without the infected element. The show seems to eschew the infected in favor of the human threat, but at this point I'm thinking It's due to budgetary constraints. 😂 In any case, I was 90% pleased with how they approached the whole David thing. It was quite close to the game with only a few minor differences. A full discussion on Joel, however, will have to wait.

The guy killed it, playing a great creeep. Its been a while since I played the game, but I remember that section being unconfortable so was dreading this ep. And they pretty much synced it up with the game too in the last sequence in the bar as its on fire, and the fella going full on psycho. I think you are injured as Ellie too, so her getting knocked down by him and trying to reach for the meat-cleaver, is in the game too, and its unbearably tense. The bar is a lot more on fire in the game though, so you are discombobulated with the smoke; but everything else was pretty much bang on from what I can remember. Its brilliantly acted by Bella, all that rage thats released as she turns that peado into mush. And the way its built up all episode and how vulnerable she must have felt throughout all this, was well done; and boy did she release it all on him. Well deserved too, though I would have preferred a slower death if Joel would have got his hands on him. However this was a fitting end for that psycho. The cannibalism aspect of it though, we can't really judge as we don't know what we'd do in their situation. Owls eat their young when they need to for energy; while we are supposed to be civilised, what is civilisation in a world like this, where its all gone to shit? I love that one of the guys (David/James) was played by Troy Baker, who plays Joel in the game. I heard his voice and it immediately sent me back to ingame Joel. Joel in the game is almost an unstoppable killing machine, and we see how terrifying Pedro's Joel is even with a barely semi-healed stab-wound. He is a force of nature in his violence and determination to find Ellie. He does have that evil side to him though that many would need to survive through this.

I take your points Caomhan (is that an Irish form of Kevin? Sorry just curious) and agree with most of them. On the infected though, I think them moving away from the threat of them throughout the show, in favour of the human threat, was the right decision. Yes, there are far more infected encounters in the game, but I (and I half sicken myself by saying this) almost find myself agreeing with David about them. The infected are what they are, parasitical organisms who spread by infecting all around them. From a drama pov there is only so much you can do with that. You could have more encounters with them, but it risks bogging the show down and making the threat of them feel quite samey. Us humans, for better and worse, are the more interesting elements to focus on.
