Usually I’m all for colorblind casting, but this episode really shows how it can backfire. It was already a stretch that a black guy would create a tourist trap glorifying Pilgrims, but did no one seriously consider how it would look to have him be lectured about not knowing what it’s like to suffer oppression?

Yeah, this episode was a most impressive one. A major highlight of it was like you noted the reaffirmation of the familial bonds between Wednesday and her family. I thought it was very sweet that you related to the lovely scene between Gomez and Wednesday. The scenes between Morticia and Wednesday were also quite lovely. I loved how the Sherriff actually apologized to Gomez, and how Gomez had a no harm, no foul response to it. To address Ryan’s comment, I'll be honest and say that genuinely didn’t occur until after I saw the show and read people’s comments. I mean, admittedly, I did a lot of theatre in school where colorblind casting is particularly prevalent. Still, I see Ryan’s comment, I hear other comments, and I say, “Point taken.” From what I understand, Enid’s mother is the most despised character of this show. I was a bit of a wise ass when Enid’s mother tries to sell the idea of the conversion camps, particularly her asking doesn’t Enid just want to wolf out and be normal. My response was, “Normal? Right, well, we can talk about normality until the cows come home, but of course if we do, we’ll keep coming back to the age-old questions: What is normal? What is home? What are cows?” I still laugh at how unsurprised I was about the coroner’s death. I was saying, “The guy practically spelled it out what with him going on about his retirement being right around the corner, and how he has plans to take his wife on a cruise. I mean, all due respect, the guy did everything short of drawing it out in crayon that he was a dead man walking.” I share your feelings of pride for Enid in standing up to her mother. The scenes with Bianca and her mother were great in showing further insight into Bianca’s character. I think you are meant to like her at this point in the show. Or at least, the show intends for you to recognize that there is much more to Bianca than simply being a vicious queen bee. Such a sweet moment with Eugene and his moms. I love the moment where Wednesday confronts Principal Weems and points out the hypocrisy of Principal Weems' actions in that, she says her actions are to protect the school and the students, yet how is she helping Eugene. I find I’m on the fence sympathy-wise when it comes to Principal Weems. On the one hand, I recognize her actions are for the greater good. On the other hand, she seems very unyielding and does not seem to realize, or perhaps is unwilling to see that she might be treading down a dangerous path. It's one of my favorite lines from Tim Burton’s work, “Villainy wears many masks, none so dangerous as the mask of virtue.” I very much enjoyed this reaction. I was able to hear the rain, but it actually enhanced my enjoyment some. Given the show, the rains added to the ambience, and yes, it was very soothing. Like I said, a most enjoyable reaction, Jess, thank you.

Enid's mother even talks about sending her to a conversion camp, just to make sure we get the metaphor.
