If you didn't watch Disenchanted right when it came out, it should definitely go on the list.

Both my favorite Wes Anderson film, and along with Birdman, my favorite film of 2014. Ultimately, although I give just the tiniest edge to Birdman in my ranking, in actuality, they’re both tied for being my favorite of that year. This is a most delightful film. As you say, a most heartwarming story that is told superbly well. Ralph Fiennes is already one of my favorite actors, and here, I believe he gives one of his greatest performances, and brings to life one of my favorite characters in film of the last decade. I’m still mad that Ralph was not at the very least nominated for an Oscar for this. This was Tony Revolori’s debut, and it was a strong debut here as the younger Zero. I was very impressed. Yes, without question, this film is visually sumptuous. A veritable feast for the eyes. Words fail to describe how beautiful it was on a big screen. Also, a major shout-out to the most whimsical Oscar winning score by Alexandre Desplat. One slight drawback is that by winning the Oscar for score is that it meant that Hans Zimmer lost for his masterpiece of a score for Interstellar, but then again, it showcases how fantastic a year in film it was that year. To answer your question about the cast, some had already worked with Wes prior; others wished to work with him for this film because they were fans of his work. Some of it was being drawn to the story itself. In the case of F. Murray Abraham who here plays the older Zero, by his own admission, he was drawn to the fact that it would be “A film that’ll make you smile. Just smile throughout.” And he was truly proud and honored to be a part of it, and get to be the storyteller, and what a storyteller Murray is. For me, I also get a big kick out of Adrien Brody being cartoonishly evil as Dimitri. Willem Dafoe, likewise, I enjoy his deviously wicked performance as Jopling, though of course, as you noted, a character does gain a few strikes against them when they take out Jeff Goldblum and kill his cat. The ending is indeed a gut punch and is very bittersweet and melancholic. It is such a great part of the ending where it shows how the story of the Grand Budapest, the friendship of Gustave and Zero, Agatha, all of it lives on decades upon decades later, and is such a perfect ending to the film. You expressed concern that perhaps this reaction wasn’t the best, there is no need to worry about that, Jess, as your reaction to this film was sublime. Yes, as you stated, you were not exactly at your most loquacious during the reaction, even so, I could see it in your eyes and in your expression just how much you were taken by this most charming film. A particularly great moment was your reaction to when Jopling gets pushed off the cliff, and Gustave cries out, “HOLY SHIT!!! YOU GOT HIM!!!” I would be interested in the livestream idea for such films as We’re No Angels, which by the way, is a terrific film. And even if say I couldn’t join you for a live viewing, the video would still be wonderful to see. It greatly pleases me to see that you very much enjoyed this film, Jess, and I thank you most sincerely for this most lovely reaction.

Desplat is now know as the Doctor Who composer for Chibnall's tenure.

Really? Was he a guest composer for a particular episode? Because, on the whole, it was Segun Akinola who composed for Chibnall's run.

Meh gimme Desplat winning for this, over Zimmer and his overblown Interstellar, where you can't hear a damn thing in the film. Mind you like a lot of Nolan works, its pretentious tripe anyway. ;) Was going to say that my favourite score of Desplat, was Interview With The Vampire, but glad I checked my soundtracks, as that was Elliot Goldenthal. Onto this film though, its a cracker. Always love a bit of Wes Anderson, and this is up there with his best. My fave film of his, is still Rushmore though, I love that film.

Replying to Saltire, fair enough on your thoughts on Interstellar, and Nolan’s filmography in general. This film is, I would say, my favorite of Alexandre Desplat’s work. Rushmore is a good one. I’d say next to Grand Budapest, my favorite Wes Anderson films would be The Royal Tenenbaums and Moonrise Kingdom.

Not seen Moonrise Kingdom, will check it out. I came off a bit harsh about Nolan and Zimmer haha! Some of their stuff I like immensely, others though just wind me up the wrong way, and Interstellar is a film I should love since I have been fascinated by the universe and astrophysics all my life.
