I too went into this not really knowing much about it. Main piece of information that was in my possession was I knew a rough idea as to the setting of the series, that was about it. Likewise, when it comes to The Midnight Club, I have yet to hear much in the way of a consensus view, reception-wise. I mean, like you said, I don’t much overly listen to the majority of opinions. I do listen to people whose opinions I trust and/or whose opinions I value, for instance, you. Your opinions I greatly value, a lot. Regarding your statement about Mike Flanagan becoming your favorite writer, whilst I wouldn’t go quite that far myself, he has risen significantly in the ranks of my favorite writers and showrunners for tv, if nothing else. From the first episode alone, this had my interest and my attention. I liked that it took it’s time setting the stage and established the atmosphere and ambience. Certainly, a most heavy topic for this show to tackle. It’s as you said, the idea of you’re young and you have your whole life ahead of you, and to have any hypothetical futures torn away from you, there are many a number of ways a person can contend with that. And knowing Flanagan’s writing, you know that those different ways will be explored. Of the group of kids, Anya made the strongest first impression, though I liked all of the other kids; there wasn’t any of them I disliked. You got Netflix to thank for the disproportionate number of jump scares by the way. I’m told that they were wanting more jump scares than there was in the past Flanagan shows, and because Flanagan personally detests jump scares, he responded by just jam-packing a shitload of jump scares into the first episode just to fuck with the Netflix executives. Your reaction to each and every jump scare was priceless beyond belief. Concerning your statement on Dr. Stanton in that you weren’t sure if she could be altogether trusted. My initial thought was similar in that given that she’s played by Heather Langenkamp, Nancy Thompson herself, my suspicion was that the show could be building towards Heather playing massively against type. On the other hand, I had the simultaneous thought that the show could be building towards you expecting that and it wouldn’t be the case. Ultimately, as I do with all the Flanagan shows, I entertained the idea of both possibilities, without seriously committing to either possibility until I saw more. Your first reaction to this show is one I greatly enjoyed. I do hope that the reception goes well and that you continue to react to this. And if that’s not in the cards, well then, if that is the case, I will wish that you have the best of times enjoying the show for yourself. I will say that if you stop reacting to the show, I would still love to hear your thoughts and opinions about it, provided you wish to share them, of course. In any event, I will respect any decision you make, Jess. Like I said, a most enjoyable first reaction to The Midnight Club.

Yay! Was really looking forward to you reacting to this. I understand if you can't continue but for me personally that will be a shame. But I support you either way. I think you're exactly right that this show is about looking at how different people react differently to the same situation. And, as always, it's the characters that draw you in.

YES! If anyone was going to react to this I knew YOU would! I know there's so much other content out there to take front burner, but I sincerely hope you continue after these first two episodes!

This is great! I hope you will continue to react to it.
