All of us who read the books were doing some uncomfortable laughing last episode when Helaena said Aemond would “need to close an eye” to get a dragon. And oddly enough, Helaena isn’t this kind of bug-obsessed weirdo in the book…but her daughter is. Which just raises the question of what exactly the endgame is with this change.

I tried to watch this, but it gives a frowny face where the video should be with the message "iframe.mediadelivery.net refused to connect." :( EDIT: this was happening on Chrome, I switched to Edge and it worked. But just a heads up, many people use Chrome.

As you succinctly put it, “Holy fuckballs, it’s messy!” in this episode of the House of the Messy. Yeah, the internet had a field day with the brightness, or more precisely the lack thereof in certain scenes. I know that a lot of fans are really invested in Rhaenyra and Daemon. I’m not, and during their scene on the beach, I'm looking away from the screen yelling, “I don’t want to see this!! NOBODY wants to see this!!!!” The primary talking point as I understand it was the family squabble. You raise a valid point that Viserys seemed far more invested in the “lies” rather than the fact that his kid is missing an eye, which I'm with you in that though I have no children of my own, that would make me quite angry. Incidentally, the manner in which you said “disgusting lies” is similar to Rhaenyra’s description over the last few episodes. First, she says that the report of her and her uncle being sighted in the brothel is a “vile accusation” then she claims that the whispers of her children’s illegitimacy are “vile, disgusting insinuations” and now, she claims that her children being called bastards are “vile insults” After hearing her thrice refer to things that are true as being “vile” I quote the oldie but a goodie and say, “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.” I fully understand Alicent’s anger in the scene with the dagger. I’m not saying she’s right, nor am I saying I condone her actions, yet I understand where she’s coming from. And yes, you are correct that Olivia Cooke is proving most phenomenal in this show. That’s not to say Emma D’Arcy hasn’t been impressive in their performance as Rhaenyra, they have, it’s more that Olivia is on a different level. She is scary good in this show. Likewise, Rhys Ifans is putting in one of his best performances here as Otto. To talk about the ending, apparently a lot of the internet was fully onboard with it, and automatically assumed that Rhaenyra and Daemon’s plan was to fake the death. Maybe I'm cynical, but I kept thinking that the situation is vague enough that we don’t know with absolute certainty that the plan was to fake Laenor’s death. And even if that was the plan from the get-go, there’s still the fact that Rhaenyra’s perfectly ok with the poor gentleman as you called him getting murdered simply because they need a body. To say nothing of the fact that like you said you expressed sympathy for Rhaenys and Corlys in that just lost their daughter, and now due to Rhaenyra and Daemon’s chicanery, they’re led to believe their son is dead as well. When I talked to my brother about it, he expressed a similar sentiment, in fact that was the part he took issue with the most. Eve Best was excellent in conveying Rhaenys’s heartbreak in that scene. Talk about how you point out you like both Alicent and Rhaenyra. I confess I'm far more on the pro-Alicent side of things, and I've gotten shit for it. Part of it is as you said with the dealing with anxiety being relatable. I’ve had many dealings with anxiety myself, and in my experience when that’s combined with other factors like Asperger’s, mild OCD, and depression, yeah, your brain can have a most vivid and at times dark and paranoid imagination. All of which lends itself to my having more noticeable empathy towards Alicent. Thing is do I dislike Rhaenyra? Not necessarily, no. I am significantly frustrated by her predilection for lies, her hypocrisy, her hubris, as well as some of her less than savory actions. There’s also the massive frustration that it seems like a vast majority of the fans, at least the ones I've heard from, they treat her like she’s a veritable saint, and by contrast condemn Alicent as a villain. Despite the frustrations that I have, I do recognize Rhaenyra is a very compelling character, even if I do personally feel that some of the worship that she receives is massively overblown. This reaction was well worth the wait, and was most enjoyable, Jess. I look forward to your next reaction to the House of the Messy.

This is even the same director who made the notoriously dark and incomprehensible final battle against the White Walkers.
