Starting with your observations about the lack of subtitles in the flashback scenes. I watch shows with the closed captioning on all the time, and it soon became apparent that the show was deliberately choosing not to subtitle the flashback scenes, which is an interesting stylistic choice. Yeah, it’s a rather slow burn with the first two episodes, which is great. The flashbacks, specifically the group that Cassian was part of kind of recalls the kids from Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. Cassian’s established age, combined with his line from Rogue One saying that he’s been in the fight since the age of six gives me a pretty good idea of when the flashbacks take place. This is aided by the fact that I recognize one or two things in the flashbacks, and that’s all I'll say about that for now as I feel the show will gradually unfold the flashback story throughout and I don’t wish to spoil anything for you. I’m with you on enjoying Deputy Inspector Ferret Face. I reiterate that if his name was said I too didn’t catch it, so that’s what I’m calling him for now. If nothing else his actor is dedicated to really selling the performance and making him a most enjoyable love to hate character. I’m also really loving his right-hand man I believe they said his name was Lieutenant Mosk. By contrast, I was very annoyed by Mister Snoopy Timm I think they said his name was who quickly proved himself to be a “manky Scots git” as I believe the expression goes. All his scenes where he’s jealous and creepy to an almost idiotic degree, I’m chuckling to myself, saying, “Boy, when it comes to being a jealous creep, this guy is in a bigger hurry than Clovis was.” In terms of cast I knew going into this that Fiona Shaw would be in this, and I was very excited as I love her work, particularly her recent work in Fleabag and especially Killing Eve. Loving her as Maarva thus far. Upon my viewing of these first episodes, I noted that other characters referred to Maarva as Cassian’s mother, yet Cassian refers to her by name. This coupled with the absence of any noticeable parents in the flashbacks, I too thought that she is an adoptive mother to Cassian and became intrigued to learn more. I also knew as did my brother that Stellan Skarsgård would be in this, and as my brother and I are most fond of his work, we both were very much looking forward to his character. I’m with you on the discomfort of having conversations with people on public transportation, and strongly related to the buyer’s discomfort in that scene. I am sharing your enjoyment of this show, Jess, and I agree that it’s starting to feel like this is a show that’s going to be something really special.

It was absolutely the right call to release these three episodes at once, as these first two are SUCH a slow burn that I'm sure a sizable number of people would have lost patience with a week between each one. But it's very nice to finally have one of these shows where we know exactly how much we're getting going in: two seasons that will lead us through these five years up to Rogue One. And I'm really loving Karn, whose whole hook is that if you didn't know about how evil the Empire is, you can easily see this guy as the hero of his own show: the one honest cop struggling against the apathy and/or corruption of all his fellows. I have no idea where his story is going, as right now it easily seems like he could be pushed over the edge to pure evil, or realize the truth and join the rebels, and both would feel valid with what's been set up. It's a very exciting feeling.

Speaking for myself, I wouldn’t have minded much if the first episode was the only one released right away as it had my attention right out the gate. And to be fair, I’m a sucker for a good slow burn when done properly, which I feel the show has done a great job with. That being said, I can see why not everyone would have the same thought.

Really like it so far. Much more like a thriller than a Star Wars series at the moment. Its going to be interesting watching Cassian work with this rebel cell and learn the things he'll need to succeed going forward; and see how this unfolds elsewhere as Mon Mothma and Bail become more involved in the series towards the establishment of the Rebel Alliance. I wonder if we'll see Cassian meet up with his sister again. He says in Rogue One "you're not the only one who lost everything", perhaps suggesting a sad fate for her. As a personal side note, you can tell a lot of this was filmed in the UK, with the amount of British actors with speaking roles. And we finally have Scotsmen and women in their native accents, which I am delighted with, since the others we see throughout Star Wars, have to adopt English accents! Good cast though, with Stellan Skarsgaard, Alex Ferns and Fiona Shaw backing up Diego, along with that guy leading the chase, who has a very expressive face, who I kind of like as a character! Very promising start to the series.

Agreed. I haven't watched the reactors I follow, including Sesska here yet with this series, as so far its not a very reactable show. That doesn't mean its bad though, I found it quite gripping so far, and will see how this all ties in with Mon Mothma and Bail Organa as they look to establish the Rebel Alliance going forward.

The pitch I’ve settled on for the show is that it’s like if John Le Carre wrote a Star Wars story.

Saltire

Yes, I know some of Le Carre's work well, which explores the seedier, grottier and sometimes just mundane life of a spy, and indeed a Star Wars great in Alec Guinness played George Smiley on several occasions in excellent tv series back in the day. Andor here definitely feels along these lines, and is a refreshing to watch and explore the lives of the more ordinary people just trying to get by in these dark times.

I read Ryan’s comment likening Andor to being a Star Wars story as written by John le Carré and thought, “Oh my God, that's perfect. That’s it!” And I'd probably say that even if Le Carré wasn’t one of my favorite authors, which he is, as the feel of this show is very much like Le Carré’s style of writing.
