This is definitely one of the better ensemble episodes of the show where everybody gets a moment or two to shine. The Mirror Universe is a very fascinating concept in Star Trek. Unpopular opinion though it may be, Spock looked damn good sporting that beard. Quite lovely that the logic is retained with this Darth Spock. Yes, some of the outfits in this were most impressive. Evil womanizing Sulu is perhaps the most unsettling part of this episode. I’m hesitant to use the word fun, but I would imagine that the opportunity that was given to George Takei to branch out of his comfort zone some and showcase his abilities as an actor, was probably gratifying. Still, I would imagine that George would probably agree with us that evil Sulu was horrifying, especially when he aggressively tried to pursue Uhura. It is therefore a very satisfying moment when Uhura smacks him and fights back. Likewise, it is equally satisfying when Uhura dealt with Marlena. The moment that got me right in the heart was when Scotty volunteers to stay behind and goes so far as to call Kirk Jim. I knew that your reaction to that moment would be my favorite moment of this reaction, and I was right. The sass from our Spock at the end of the episode had me in stitches. Only mild complaint of the episode is the last scene that reveals that Marlena exists in this universe. Seeing Kirk’s reaction to that development, I rolled my eyes and said, “...Oh for chrissake.” I’m in all favor of as you said, someone going up to Sulu at the end and thanking him for being his iconic self. Alas, the show deprived us of that moment. Glad to see you loved the episode. It is hard to properly articulate what or what does not make a great parallel universe plot, I agree. This one is for sure a great one. Regarding your opening remarks thanking us for supporting your Star Trek reactions, let me just say that I’ve been loving the Star Trek reactions. I hadn’t watched the show in quite a while, so this has been a real treat to sit down, watch it again, and to experience your journey through the show. It’s been quite wonderful, Jess, thanks.

This episode is the entire reason that the goatee became a standard visual shorthand for "evil twin."

Your Star Trek reactions are awesome, I always look forward to Saturday because of them!

I have not seen most of Star Trek TOS until now as I watch them with you as I think I have said before. This episode is one I have heard of so often, but I have not seen it before. It was great to finally see it. I enjoyed it quite a bit. I am not sure I would have gotten around to watching it if you were not doing these reactions so thank you for doing them.

Evil Sulu and Conspiratorial Mike Yates - it hasn't been a good week. I haven't seen the episodes for quite a while so I first rewatch the show (with the original special effects) - and then watch along with the reaction (viewing the new enhanced effects). I'm really enjoying going through the series again. Thanks. Something that bugged me in this episode, I think from the first time I saw it, was that with the original effects when we see the alternate universe transition the Enterprise switches direction left/right/left and ends up going off to the right. Then, after the opening credits (during which we allow ourselves to consider fashion issues) the alternate Enterprise is shown moving left under the episode titles. No - wrong way! I'd notice that and worry. But, with the enhanced effects in place, they've changed it and now show the Enterprise travelling off to the right under the titles. Nice.

I listen to a science podcast and last week they were discussing a new cosmological theory - that our universe might have a mirror-twin. Now, obviously the concept of a twin universe isn't new. The interesting new bit is that it could provide an explanation for dark matter. And the theory is actually testable. However, the podcast only got eight seconds into the discussion before someone brought up people wearing goatees in the mirror universe.

Yes, George Takei is disturbingly good at playing up Evil Sulu! I think the cast must have relished the opportunity to go villainous for the episode, unsettling as it was for the rest of us. Of course, poor Walter is suffering again. Hey Jess, have you ever brought any reactions to Primeval or Babylon Five into consideration. Both have large ensemble casts and may be - considering the production companies involved of course! - right up your street. Just checking!
