Hurray! I was wondering if this was coming, what a lovely surprise! Can’t wait to watch this later, one of my absolute favourite movie series!

Brad

Awesome! Can't wait for Catching Fire! =D

I 100% agree with your comments at the end! I was a huge fan of the books, and this film absolutely left out a lot of character backgrounds and personalities that were present in the books, that added emotional connections to characters, especially Rue. But like you also said, it's only a two hour movie, so they didn't do TOO badly considering that. The next film, Catching Fire, is much MUCH better in my opinion, and the ones following. And having watched your reactions for a couple years now, I think I have a rough grasp of what you like in a story, and I definitely think the next three are way more up your street. Side note - You might've recognised Seneca Crane (the game maker snazzy facial hair dude) from American Horror Story if you've watched that? I do agree that the romance throughout this movie is very cliche, but I forgive it because it was used as a tactic to get people to root for them! The next films allow for more character-driven plots, without cliche storylines. Whilst I do enjoy this movie, it's actually my least favourite of the four, so my excitement levels for the next three films are very high. Thank you for a great reaction, it was a lot of fun revisiting this film after a few years, and I look forward to May 1st! :) (Also, on a random note, I just wanted to quickly mention how much I'm loving your Sarah Jane Adventures reactions, it was one of my favourite shows growing up and seeing someone react to it so much later on is really nostalgic and fun, so thanks!)

Also, Woody Harrelson's character is called Haymitch! A fantastic character, glad you've taken to him!

Oh - this is maddening - there must be slightly different cuts of this - the copy I'm watching has a some scene that don't appear to e in your copy - or at least in a slightly different order - having to continually resync with your reaction is driving me bonkers! You do seem to be enjoying it though - so that's a good thing!

Like most YA stories from this decade, The Hunger Games is a mishmash of ideas and inspirations from things we've seen before with a dystopian future as backdrop. In this case, greek myth meets gameshow meets Battle Royale, a terrific, anarchic, gruesome and hilarious japanese flick by Kinji Fukasaku from 2000. I urge anyone who hasn't seen this gem to at least check out the trailer. Unlike most YA stories, however, The Hunger Games is good. With room for improvement. I had the same reaction as you, Jess, to the trailers and promos. I was expecting overwrought, melodramatic teen drama, and while there are patches of it, the rest of the movie makes up for it. Yes, it is a bit predictable (that might even be an understatement), but the cast is strong, the pace is good, the story is solid and the visuals are great. I particularly enjoy the the Capitol with it's bloodthirsty, weirdly sentimental and fabulously made-up inhabitants. I know the exact moment this film won me over: when Katniss and Peeta rode their chariot through the Capitol, flames at their backs. Good stuff: I have a phobia of wasps, and the tracker jacker scene is pretty uncomfortable for me. So that's fun! Bad stuff: Peeta's bakery camo is ridiculous. What is he, Stan Winston?? Good stuff: Rue's death and the riot in district 11. It's kind of funny to plan to write something in the comments, and then hear you say the exact thing i was going to write. Bad Stuff: Not enough archery commentary ;) Good stuff: Stanley Tucci loved playing gameshow host Caesar Flickerman. Really looking forward to the next installment. Like i said, The Hunger Games was a solid movie, with room for improvement. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire did improve.

So the trouble this movie has is that the book was told from the point of Katniss and we were reading her thoughts throughout the entire story. When you get that it becomes a lot clearer that the cheesy, unbelievable love plot - which you obviously didn't enjoy - was nothing more than a story even in-universe. Peeta loved Katniss, but Katniss didn't feel the same. She was playing the game in order to get the outside world to back them. When she seems distraught because she thinks he's dead, in the books this is after a point where she realises he is such an honest and better person than her, she internally vows to make sure he survives and not her. But yeah, the whole love thing was Katniss deceiving everyone (and that includes Peeta, he thought it was genuine). I understand you thinking this was a teen drama before hand and this movie probably did nothing to dispel that, but the scenes with President Snow (Donald Sutherland) and the riot scenes are the most important moving forward plotwise. I actually really enjoyed the Hunger Games take on the traditional main characters fall in love plot. Watching the movie having read the book you just feel really bad for Peeta being strung along.

Thanks for the reaction! I just wanted to touch on how you noted that the romance felt forced. I don't know how much you want to hear about the books, but they're told in the first person (which is hard to translate into movies, and are Katniss really didn't feel much for Peeta throughout the games. When Haymitch sent the soup after she kissed Peeta, she figured out he (Haymitch) would reward her for keeping up with the love charade to entertain the people of the Capitol. She realized that the "star-crossed lovers" angle would keep them alive with sponsors, so she tried to play it up. The only time that she felt anything romantic towards Peeta was during one of their kisses in the cave, but she soon dismissed it. Meanwhile, Peeta had no idea what she was doing and did genuinely feel romantically towards her, which is why he seemed surprised/upset that she wanted to forget everything that happened in the arena. So the "relationship" that develops in the arena is quite one-sided and definitely forced on her part. Nevertheless, Katniss definitely cares about Peeta as a person and feels bad that she's used his feelings.

Also a pretty telling moment from the books that is left out of the films is when the announcement is made at the end that only one person can survive, Katniss draws her bow and swings round to aim at Peeta and he's just stood there. Shame they changed that.

Something like this? <a href="https://www.hypable.com/what-scenes-were-cut-from-the-uk-version-of-the-hunger-games/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.hypable.com/what-scenes-were-cut-from-the-uk-version-of-the-hunger-games/</a>

Ah no - in my case, I think it might be a bad rip of the DVD - got some mixed up scenes and some that are duplicated. Hard to tell what with the repeated pig flashback.

As for Haymich's story, they do delve deep into it in the 2nd book, if I remember correctly theres a whole chapter with his Reaping, Interview and the Hunger Game. His case is super interesting since his game had a twist, there was 2 boys and 2 girls from each district instead of 1 each. Unfortunetley im pretty sure they dont go into it at all in the movies (I read all the books, only watched the first film, remember reading articles on that) If youre really interested after watching the movies you should definetely read the books or at least Haymich's chapter.
