Harry Potter 3 Reaction - Google Drive

JojoInSpace

Here we go again with another long "I TOOK NOTES WHILE WATCHING YOUR REACTION" comment. :P Hope you don't mind too much! First off I just want to say that I really enjoyed this reaction a lot. The other movies I did enjoy as well, but you seemed to be having a better time (especially without so many snakes) and I like this movie better than the other too, so I enjoyed it more. :) I had a few moments where I laughed out loud either with you or at your reaction (especially your expression whenever something WTF was going on). Alright, here we go! 1. Harry is definitely an angsty teenager. For a while. Teen angst movie, definitely. But also... well. You'll see. ;) 2. I don't like the talking heads either. They are creepy. It was a while since I reread the books, but I think they were a movie addition, because people thought they were funny? 3. Not a lot of Snugglepuss in this movie. But at least we got a shoutout. At least one Snugglepuss needs to be said per reaction. 4. Yeah, as you suspected, Harry was definitely getting a bit of special treatment there. Blowing up your aunt wouldn't have been such a mild offense if it wasn't for the fact that the Minister was a bit busy with the whole "Black is after Potter" thing, most likely. 5. The owl is a she, and she's called Hedwig, and we all love her as well. :) 6. I love your love for the Weasleys. And I agree. They're such an amazing family. I know that can't all be in the movies because it would take time, but just know that they have a lot of family bonding all the time and are absolutely adorable. 7. Did you recognize the guy who played Dumbledore? He was in Doctor Who! :D The grumpy guy in Christmas Carol, the fish in the clouds one. 8. "Who the fuck cut this guy's hair?" I don't know but they shouldn't be allowed near anyone's hair ever again. This one and the next one, people decided to have some very weird haircuts. I don't know why. Also I love your reactions to everything Draco does. 9. Speaking of things I love - your reactions to everything Ron and Hermione. "SHE GRABBED HIS HAND". All of it. Amazing. Let your feels out. 10. I'm very sorry about the snake and no one warned you. At least it was a very brief snake. 11. Your reaction to Neville's boggart was amazing. Snape walking out like a boss, and then Snape in Neville's grandma's clothing. Alan Rickman pulled that one off nicely. Poor Neville though. I know what it's like to be terrified of some teachers when you're that age. :P 12. I would also have LOVED to see Malfoy's boggart. And your idea that it would be Harry had me pausing and laughing and texting my friend so - well done. 13. There is no specific separate book about Lily and her background, or his parents background in general, but there's a lot of backstory told in this book in particular that gets completely cut out of the movie. If you're interested, I could give you some fun tidbits - it's not spoilers since they never really bring those things up specifically, but it helps give some context. I'll get to that more a bit later though. 14. Your reaction to Snape's werewolf lesson was amazing. He's just so bitter and 100% done in that scene. He acts like "why do I have to TEACH people oh my god can't children just be quiet". 15. I like to point out that Draco spent time drawing that drawing he sent to Harry, and casting a spell on it so it would move. So much effort. 16. Oh, you're wondering of people wrote fanfiction about Harry and Draco? Oh boy. OOOOH BOY. I mean, I was never a fanfiction reading person when it came to Harry Potter (I read the books before I really knew what that was), but I KNOW and I have FRIENDS and oh boy Sess. You have no idea. 17. I too love the twins. They're amazing. 18. I have THINGS to say about that map but I'll get to that later. 19. Even if Ron wasn't in the end of the movie much, at least you know him and Hermione spent almost all of their trips to Hogsmead village on their own without Harry! 20. Seeing Hagrid being sad is the absolute worst. 21. I like how most people are like "SHIT" when they see Snape coming on the map, and you're like "YES". 22. ”My dad didn’t strut” - "How would you know?" You make an excellent point, Sess. You make an excellent point. 23. I like how you view Snape here. As you said, he's a bit of a jerk. He's a bullying teacher, and he definitely has it out for Harry personally. But he keeps order and he's one of the few teachers at this school who makes sure no one gets physically hurt. He's VERY strict, rude, and an ass, but it does kind of help when you teach at a school where things tend to, you know, randomly explode. :P Also you know, he's Alan Rickman. 24. Fun fact: If you've seen the movie Love Actually, the actors who play Snape and Trelawney (the crazy divination teacher) are married in that. 25. That punch is everything and I had to pause and replay your reaction to it. So great. It's one of my favorite moments. 26. I feel bad for saying this, but I was kind of happy that you were so sad about Buckbeak's execution. It's very tragic, but it was "fun" to see you react to it. 27. "HARRY GET THE FUCK OFF" Harry is the sneakiest third wheel in existence. He stops himself from becoming a third wheel before it actually happens. Sneaky sneaky. 28. That is indeed the guy from Enchanted. 29. I love that moment when Snape is ready to rip them a new one, but the moment there's a real danger, he protects them. Nice that you picked up on it. 30. "WHY AREN'T THEY BRINGING RON" I would like to ask JK Rowling the same thing. :( I miss him in this. 31. You get a lot of cookies for figuring out both "Is that what she heard in the woods" and "Maybe it wasn't his dad but him!". Well done! 32. "I'd like a nice cup of tea - or a large brandy" I feel you Dumbledore. 33. "Did what? Goodnight." Dumbledore is no.1 troll, confirmed. 34. "Was it Snape that [leaked that Lupin is a werewolf]?" Yes. I don't know why they just imply it in the movie, but it seemed like you figured it out either way. :P 35. That end is very sudden, I agree. I mean, I love this movie, but it does end very... oddly? 36. Glad you liked this one a lot! And that Ron and Snape seems like your favorites this far I can only give you thumbs up for. I won't say more than that, obviously, but let's just say you'll learn much more about the potions master as we go along. Before I get into the last point, which is going to get a bit long, I just want to say that if you did end up reading this whole long thing, Sess, then well done you. :) Sorry for clogging up your patreon with this monster of a comment. But you know how long my comments get on ORDINARY reactions, and this is an entire movie. (But really, if you'd like me to shorten them down, do tell me. I won't take offense. :P I really don't want to bother you with them.) Just want you to know that I really appreciate these commentaries. They're a lot of fun. 37. Okay, so here comes me talking about a bunch of things I wrote down but avoided adding in because they seemed out of place. Let me preface with this: I love the Harry Potter movies. A lot. And I know people who don't, and I know people who never read the books and love them, and who hate them. But there is one issue I do want to bring up. There comes a certain point, and I think it begins here and becomes more obvious when it goes along, that certain directors and scriptwriters for this franchise assume that you've read the books - which is stupid, my boyfriend never read the books, and he was very confused by some stuff going on in later movies, because they never explain it. One of these things that happens in this book is going deeper into the relationship of Lupin, Sirius, James, Peter, etc, and the marauders map, why Harry's patronus looked like a stag, why Snape is so nasty here especially, why Sirius and him were bickering against each other. Sure, some of it gets explored later in the movies, but not what's relevant for this movie in particular. I won't get into a long detailed explanation here - but you seemed to express an interest in knowing some backstory and if you want to hear some more then I'll be glad to provide it. (And for all of those worried, yes, I'm very aware of what does and does not get brought up later.) But I would like to just take a brief moment to explain the marauders map, and how Lupin knew of it, since that is a huge plot point in the book that never gets brought up or explained in the movies. If you completely want to ignore this, I get that, and then I'll just settle with saying that it was a really fun reaction and you're great. :) Anyway, to carry on from that: Basically, at school, the group of James, Sirius, Lupin and Peter called themselves the Marauders and created the map. The names that they call themselves come from what their animagus (wizards who can transform themselves into animals) were. Though Lupin wasn't an animagus but a werewolf, obviously. Padfoot is Sirius (since he's a dog). Moony is Lupin (he's a werewolf). Wormtail is Peter (rat) and Prongs is James, because he could transform into a stag. THIS is why Harry thinks that it's his dad casting the patronus - because the corporal form Harry's patronus takes (a corporal patronus is just a very powerful patronus. It takes the shape of an animal one feels safe with) the shape of a stag. That's that! Just very brief, there's a bit of a story of how those names came about and such, but I didn't put that here. If you want some more "hey we couldn't fit this backstory into the movies so let's just cut it even though it still plays into character's actions and is fun to know" info, I'm here and clearly I can talk about HP for hours, and I'll make sure to just talk about what's relevant for this one. But if you don't, I totally get that, and I'll stop writing this really long comment now because it is ridiculous. :P Hope you enjoy the next one as well! It's one I haven't rewatched in a while, so it's gonna be fun seeing it with you! See you!

JojoInSpace, i don't care what Sess thinks of you long comments. I love them XD And now i don't have to bring up the whole "friends at school"-thing myself! I always felt that the scene in the shrieking shack felt very rushed, even before reading the books. I'm gonna harp on for a while about what i dislike about PoA now, and why it's my least favourite HP film. Overall, PoA is a step up from the first two, as a film. But i still kind of enjoy it less. Things keep nagging me with this one. I would have liked to see less annoying additions (shrunken heads, animal noise candy, fighting with the Monster Book of Monsters and the likes) and more of relevant stuff, the backstory of The Marauders Map, the deep friendship between Harry's dad, Lupin, Sirius and Peter. The time travelling irritates me as well. When i saw the movie for the first time, i knew the rest of the plot as soon as Hermione pulled out the time turner. It's a whole chapter that's more or less a repeat of earlier ones. And WIZARDS HAVE TIME TRAVEL?? If anything is more powerful than magic, it's time travel. Good luck stopping Shnagglepuss doing anything he wants when he gets his hands on a time turner! Also, both the book and the film makes it clear that this is deterministic time travel. They are not, in fact, changing anything. It would always had happened. The shield patronus... meh, i can live with it. I don't like the transitions. They're ugly. I detest the freeze frame at the end, but the thing i dislike most of all is a tiny little bit of useless magic in The Leaky Cauldron. J.K. Rowling made magic in her world very practical, with a simple rule that the movies can't be arsed with: You need to channel your magic through a wand. The first thing we see in The Leaky Cauldron is a wizard stirring his tea with a spoon, by turning his magical finger above it. What. Is. The. Point? He's hardly using less energy than if he had simply been holding the spoon! Surely, if you stir your tea with magic it's so you can use your hand to do something else, instead of waggling it over the cup?? Arrggh! Yeah, it's a nitpick, but god, it's so very irritating and illogical. On the plus side, the film looks gorgeous. The use of shadow and light in the cinematography is awesome. The three main actors are more confident in their acting abilities, and Gary Oldman is great. Also, less quiddich, but sadly no Pig. Next up, MY favourite HP film, based on my favourite HP book. Can't wait.

JojoInSpace

Aw, that's sweet of you! Thank you, that really made me very happy. :) I tend to get rambly, but it's fun to know people read them.

Dave Ford

Erm. What she said. :-D Seriously, how do you follow that? Well - two things I'd say - your views on Snape are wonderfully nuanced and it's going to be real shame that you're getting to know that character without all the stuff in the books.. And, as you should have gathered from the movie (but I know it's hard) - Snape was at school with James, Lily, Sirius, Lupin and Peter. - and while there aren't any prequel books, there's a lot of 'flash-back' material in the HP books which goes over the previous generations school days. Like JoJo says, Snape is a nasty, bullying officious teacher, who ratted on Lupin and got him sacked and.. and.. did nothing other than his best to protect the students at the school when, even after complaining to Dumbledore about his decision to employee a werewolf, did his best to try and forewarn and arm his students so they could protect themselves. Only other thing I want to add is how much I love Michael Gambon's portrail of Dumbledore - admittedly, Harris was suffering from ill health, but accepting that I think Gambon's version is just a lot more robust and complex. His 'Did what?' at the end is great - a sign that he's treating them as grown-ups - expecting them to keep what just happened a secret and not wanting to know what happened, and smart enough to know not to ask.

Clare

Fantastic reaction, you have a lot coming with Snape so don't worry about that :) Also this wasn't explained in the movies but the creators of the marauders map are actually Lupin, Peter, James and Sirius, there nick names Moony, Wormtale, Prongs and pad foot , all representing the animals they can turn into. Lupin is the werewolf obviously, moony. Wormtale because he is a rat, Sirius because he is a dog and the most interesting one is Harrys father James. The animal he could turn into was a Stag. And Harrys portronus that he casts to fend of the dementors near the end is a Stag as well :)

Don't want to spoil anything, but what you said about this being a stepping stone and being more grown up is definitely true. The films matured with the cast and the audience.

Great reaction! I agree with JojoInSpace, you seemed to enjoy this one a little more than the first two. It’s one of my favorites, both the movie and the book, so I’m glad to see that it entertained you. Loved your reaction to Hermione grabbing Ron’s hand. Mmmmmm-hmm! I know poor Ron got left out of the adventure a bit, but Hermione got left out of the previous film’s big spider extravaganza in the forest; I like that they each got a turn to team up with Harry on something. Just curious if you’re planning on reading the books sometime? Not before the movies, of course, to remain unspoiled for your reactions, but if you love the Weasley family (and how can you not??) you’ll really enjoy all the deeper stuff they’ve got going on in the book series. This was the first of the films that had big chunks of info left out of the adaptation. I always feel bad for Movie Harry, who doesn’t know the backstory of the Marauder’s Map and how it ties into his dad’s history. (What JojoInSpace said.) Not everything can make it into the adaptation, I know, but I always felt that this movie could have squeezed in a few more pertinent tidbits. Still love it, though. Re: the snake(s) – I know you won’t want to be spoiled, but seriously, do you want a heads up about just how snake-a-licious things are gonna get? I worry for your health otherwise. (My thing is sharks. Can’t watch most shark movies. I’d want to know.) p.s. I re-watched all of these movies when they were on TV the other weekend, and even during the darkest moments, I kept giggling at the thought of “Shnugglepuss”. That's gonna stay with me! :-)

I just want to add that I think that the films are perfectly fine to watch without having read the books, and that a lot of my complaints comes from being an obsessive fan. So I don't want Sess to feel like "well people aren't happy with these reactions because I'm not reading the books", because I think that's absolutely OK and you shouldn't need to. BUT I did have a lot of friends, and my boyfriend, who saw the movies without having read the books, and especially the later ones left them occasionally confused. It doesn't RUIN them at all, but it is the filmmakers making an assumption that you'll know certain things (like, they make the assumption here in this movie a couple of times, that then they just assume that you know going forward), so they just skim them over. That was more what my offer off "hey you want to know some short backstory that doesn't really get brought up but still informs characters actions, and you expressed an interest in", because I don't think Sess wants to spend time reading the books, and I don't think she should have to. :)

Dave Hampton

Wow, I think these are the longest most well thought out comments I have seen in a while. I am loving Sess's reactions and I think I am also going to love this comment section as the movies go on.

Janel Rodriguez

Jan Bohman--just a small correction. Wizards can do magic without wands. The wands help them to focus their magic, but they can do spells without them. Harry did magic without even knowing he was a wizard (to Dudley) and without his wand (to his aunt in this movie). So it happens in Rowling's world.

Janel Rodriguez

I thought "pigeon horse" as a description of Buckbeak to be hilarious.

Janel Rodriguez

I <3 Ron. In movie 5 he is not used a lot either. :-(

Dylan Cooper

Another brilliant reaction, definitely my favourite of your Harry Potter ones so far. I'm glad that you seem to be liking the series more as it matures, future movies in the franchise definitely deal with mature themes and some scenes that I think you'll really enjoy. I LOVED your reaction to Hermione punching Draco, I think it was from that moment that I adored her :') Also your love of the Weasley family is really sweet and lovely and relatable to watch. I cannot WAIT for the fourth film reaction, you're doing a really great job with these reactions so far, thank you very much :)

Michael Morand

I have a feeling I was one of the people who said there would be no snakes in this movie. I genuinely forgot about this one. I'm so sorry Sesska! And it looks like you're getting snakes in every film. It's pretty ironic that you hate them cause your house (Slytherin) is all about snakes. Anyways, great reaction. You seem to have found your favourite characters and are invested in their stories. You will get to see more of Snape's story as well.

Opti_Frog

Hey, Janel. I admit that my blanket statement was faulty. After reading (or rather, listening to) the books about 20 times, my understanding was that magic sometimes "spill out" of young witches and wizards involuntarily, and that that is different from performing spells. But there is a wide world of wizarding knowledge that can not be found in the books. I've read up on it a bit, and you are quite correct. "Wand-less magic is the performance of magic without the use of a wand. It can be volatile and is often difficult to perform, and can thus only be reliably accomplished by witches and wizards of great skill. The wand was a European invention, and some cultures traditionally did not rely upon wands for performing magic. Native American witches and wizards traditionally practised wand-less magic. African witches and wizards also historically practised wand-less magic, and continued to use it to cast many spells even after adopting the wand in the 20th century." I'm still annoyed by the spoon. XD

Valerie

Great reaction! Harry is definitely angsty but then again he has good reason to be a bit angsty with the Dursleys being the worst and everything. But yeah this is definitely the start of teengage angst! I can't stand the shruken heads either- they're not in the books and whenever I watch this movie, it makes me so frustrated that they spent so much time on those shruken heads and on the seasons changing instead of spending just a couple minutes more clearly explaining the history between Lupin, Sirius, James, Pettigrew and Snape. I have to say rewatching it this time, they did do better at explaining the situation than I remembered, but it takes a while in the book to explain it and important details got left out in the movie, which thankfully I see others have explained. :) But seriously, I don't understand why they couldn't include one line of Lupin saying at the end when he gave the map back to Harry, that they were the ones that created it. It would have taken all of 10 seconds, tops. So when Hermione says to Sirius something like "If you want to kill Harry, you'll have to kill us too!!" that was Ron's line in the book. It's really sad how often they relegate Ron to comic relief in the movies. I always thought it was a bit unfair that Ron didn't get to time travel with Harry and Hermione but then I just now remembered that Hermione spends like a third of Chamber of Secrets in a coma so maybe JK Rowling was trying to balance that out? But yeah, I think Ron time traveling would have been very entertaining! I generally don't like Michael Gambon as Dumbledore for reasons I can't explain until later movies but I LOVE his "did what? good night!" This is probably the Harry Potter movie I've seen the most for some reason and there are some great things about it- it's probably one of my favorites of the books- but boy there are a some weird choices in this movie. Like the candies that made the Gryffindor boys act like animals? Not in the books. The note Draco sends Harry in class? Not in the books as far as I can remember. And those shrunken heads? Not in the books, also what the heck. And the freeze frame ending with him flying on the new broom is just so corny. Oh and so sorry about the snake! I think I was also one of the people who said there were no snakes in this one, totally forgot about the scene with the boggart turning into one! Looking forward to Goblet of Fire next month! It's been a while since I watched it but I remember liking the movie pretty well.

Janel Rodriguez

Did anyone mention that the three-way hug that annoyed Jess because Harry was encroaching on what should have been a Ron-Hermione moment (after the "execution" of Buckbeak) was actually the director's wink at his movie Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN which was the film that put him on the map? It's a version of all the ads for that film.
