Hey all!

As I said yesterday, there have been some pretty significant changes behind the scenes at DMDave. As we move into a near year (and eventually a new edition!), I decided it was time to take a significant look at the company and what we offer and make some major adjustments.

While we're still hammering out details, I thought I'd at least share some of the most significant moves. That way, if you have questions or concerns, we can start ironing them out together now.

BroadSword Monthly is Ending

I share this with a heavy heart, but we're officially ending BroadSword. Issue 24 will be the last regular issue, and then we will do an extensive collection of "Best of DMDave" that will serve as our big farewell issue.

Since the beginning, we have had high hopes for BroadSword. Unfortunately, we could never crack more than 500 subscribers at our peak. These days, we only have 200 or so who subscribe. With the cost of layouts, art, and everything else that goes into it—plus the enormous time sink—it's never been profitable. Still, it was fun to flex and say we had the only monthly (well, kind of monthly) Fifth Edition adventure book.

Some of you have been long-time gold and higher subs on here. So we will need to find a way to make up back issues. Granted, the sheer volume of digital content we put out, plus other forthcoming benefits, should make up for it. Regardless, I hope to give store credit/discounts on Kickstarters, etc. moving forward. I'll chat with all of you and figure out the best way forward.

For now, as long as you were a gold or platinum patron this month or last, you will receive a copy of BroadSword #24. And if you renew in October, you will receive a copy of The Best of DMDave Compendium, which we hope to have out before the end of the year.

Also, gold and platinum patrons will now have unlimited access to all DMDave content on Patreon, no matter how old.

One Adventure Pack Per Week

We added the Dungeon of the Week series, hoping it would turn more heads. Unfortunately, it hasn't done much to bring in more folks. So, for the time being, we will pause Dungeon of the Week in favor of Dungeons and Lairs releases.

Campaign Building

Dungeons & Lairs will continue to stay with the same format as before. However, each new D/L will be set in a sandbox region. We're going to start with Yazur island. I've got 20 locations mapped out and plan to bring each of those to life over the next 4-5 months.

One big reason I want to focus on campaigns is that I enjoy the world of Omeria, especially now that we've got our art in line with the idea of Omeria I've always had for it.

I will be creating these places using your suggestions. We have already started with Yazur Island, incorporating your ideas into our world. And this will continue with weighted suggestions based on your tier (i.e., platinum patron suggestions almost always get added).

Video Series Coming

Starting soon, I will make weekly (or more) videos on how to do all the things I do related to Fifth Edition; this includes every step of my campaign planning and adventure writing process, including:

  • Campaign Planning
  • Creating Worlds
  • Balancing Adventures
  • Map Making

Videos will be available to all patrons the week they appear.

Videos in the back catalog will only be available to gold and platinum patrons.

Playtest Club

Electrum, gold, and platinum patrons will participate in our "playtest club," allowing you to check out our content before it goes live. Our select DMDave DMs and function will run these games as a west-marches-style game. We've already started testing it and plan to do more soon.

Questions, Concerns, Etc.

I'm sure some of you will have questions, especially those who've supported BroadSword all this time. Please drop a comment below, or feel free to DM me here on Patreon or Discord.

Thanks all!

As much as I liked the idea of Dungeon of the Week, I run a twice-monthly game that only delves into dungeons every five to six sessions. I have a massive backlog (which is awesome), but could never keep up with it in terms of actual play.

I previously couldn't invest long-term for the Gold tier but I want to support you this month and for October as you wrap up some of your options. I wish you luck going forward :)

Broadsword is a great mag to be honest! The only gripe I had was material that was published separately, was usually included in the mag which was redundant for the tier. I also enjoyed the bonus Dungeon of the Week... I felt it was a nice privilege for being in a higher tier 🤷‍♂️ Unfettered access to old content I feel is nice compensation, thanks Dave! I just wish it included hard copies of Broadsword 1-8 for me 😉😂

I really thought you were knocking it out of the park with the Dungeon of the Week. I was enjoying those far more than the D/L especially Ruined Sanctum of the Void Prince and Forlorn Temple of Mash-Dinaxis. They felt interesting and the monster make up was varied (undead spiders!) The D/L series feels like Monster Manual monsters living in their homes in obvious groupings.

I love DotW, but I’m about to end my business relationship with Forgotten Adventures. Plus, our main PDF converter left the company so we’re a bit short staffed.

Well... I think all these changes still make sense, I think you made the right adjustments and yes, it's so sad that BroadSword has to end...

Anonymous

Yeah, I only have a few gaps of earlier issues left to fill in my catalog. Broadsword is the reason I subscribed!

Disappointing but understandable if it is not profitable. I really don’t avail myself of the other aspects of the patroon. I was in it for the physical magazine. Since I am owed several issues will I get the final and compendium?

dmdave

Yep! Message me on here or Discord and we can calculate what you're owed. I've also got copies of Pexia, Hot8, and Legends of Omeria to offer up, plus any back issues you lack.

Kishpa

Well dang... But understandable. I've got all of the Broadswords behind me with post its all over

To confirm: Upgrading to Gold now will give me access to the full back catalog of foundry adventures?

I take it this means we won’t be getting the rest of the Giants themed mega dungeon?

dmdave

Without support staff, I've had to make some pretty big changes. I was having fun with giants, but yeah... gotta focus on the core elements. But don't worry... there's still going to be plenty of giants

Sad to see, but makes sense. Absolutely love broadsword and legit carry a copy with me at all times for when I get some downtime for reading. Access to all online material is wonderful and foundry content is awesome, still have my eye on that first physical compendium though! All the best, I ain't going anywhere regardless :)
