Good morning! 🐸

Today marks the release of 1.6.0 major update for the Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D 4K texture pack! This update is, once again, absolutely huge and and includes over 170 new 4K textures covering several areas, with a primary focus on Clock Town and the surrounding areas as well as Termina Field, Woodfall and Snowhead. It also includes new character textures, user-interface upgrades and more! Oh- and japanese translated textures for japanese speaking players! And that's just the top of the iceberg. Here's what's new:

170+ New Textures!

This update includes over 170 new 4K textures, many of which are completely remade from scratch. This includes both environment textures such as the ground, walls, stone tiles and bricks, wooden panels etc. It also includes many new interior textures, completely overhauling several locations such as the Trading Shop, Stock-Pot Inn and Mayor's Office in Clock Town. There are also new foliage textures, as well as enhanced textures for Link and his various accessories. And at last, the Hero's Shield has finally been re-re-textured, now looking leagues better than before! There are tons of miscellaneous textures as well that have been completely remade, such as several of the masks Link wears, many of the doors, the post boxes in clock town, the outside of clock town itself and vast parts of the environment textures in Snowhead and Woodfall. Like previous updates, it helps it all comes together really nicely and makes the whole pack feel a lot more polished and complete. The details all add up!

Improved Japanese translation textures thanks to work by Tomoki Sato ("LINK")

Tomoki Sato (a user who also goes by the name "LINK") has generously been helping with translating most of the UI textures of this texture pack, as well as the OOT3D 4K texture pack, over to Japanese! The first batch covering some of the textures has been added in this update, with more getting included in future releases. Please follow them on Twitter here: https://twitter.com/LINK_genkaiya

Updated Citra and ReShade (fixes many problems!)

Citra has finally been updated to a modern version in this version of the pack, which means the bug that crashes the game for AMD Graphics Card users no longer occurs- wooo! This also features several quality of life enhancements, such as the ability to split the top and bottom screens into separate windows. ReShade has also been updated to version 5.6, which also comes with several stability and feature improvements. For instance, the game view should no longer freeze on some systems because of this change, and frame rate should be higher as well.

Updated Shader presets (Henriko Ultra 6.0 and N64 Style 2.0!)

The two default shader presets that come with the pack have been updated and improved in this version! Henriko Ultra 6.0 looks sharper and less washed out than the 5.0 version, and the N64 Style 2.0 shader looks closer to the N64 version and now has appropriate aspect ratio scaling by default. Oh, and both also perform noticably better as well!

Absolutely crazy file size optimization gains!

Like the OOT3D 4K before it, MM3D 4K has received the same file optimization treatment, reducing the overall file sizes of the pack by a mind-blowing 250% (Yes, you read that correctly). And best of all, there is no noticable reduction in image quality! The benefits of this change are numerous. Such as faster loading times, reduced stuttering, improved frame rates, higher compatibilty and of course shorter download times. It's a win-win, really. This could be the most under rated change!

And many bugs fixes, optimizations and minor changes...

Minor issues from the previous version has been fixed. Performance has also been marginally improved due to the previously described optimizations. This should lead to a more polished and overall enjoyable experience for everyone using the texture pack.

That's mostly it for this update. Enjoy!

The update is available to all you Patrons here, with a public release in two weeks from when this post was published!

There is also a 4K version available, if your computer can handle it! The 4K version includes higher quality textures than the 1080p version, and will work on all displays- even those that don't display in 4K resolution. It will still look better than the 1080p version, no matter the display!

Please feel free to try it out!

(Only available for the Citra 3DS emulator, the texture pack does not work on real 3DS consoles).

Selecting your game region (if you're using the PAL/European or Japanese version of the game);

All you need to do now, if you're using the European version of Majora's Mask 3D, click the "Run this if you're using the PAL (European) version of the game.bat" file inside the texture pack folder. Done! It'll now work great with your version of the game. Easy, right?

How to enable MXAO (ambient occlusion) & DoF (Depth of Field):

This means you can now experience glorious self shadowing around objects, which looks really great with MM 3D's fantasy art style. Try it out by doing the following:

* Set your game view to "Single" in Citra.

* Enter fullscreen in Citra.

* Press the "HOME" button on your keyboard, this will bring up the ReShade UI.

* Check the "MXAO" box in the list of effects, if it's not already checked.

* Go to the "Add-ons" tab in ReShade and check the box next to the depth buffer in the list with the highest value (it should be a very high number while all others are 0). This number will change constantly, but don't worry it's supposed to do that!

* You're done. Have fun!

I deleted the last version and put these files in. I noticed the number of files went from 6.6K-ish to 4.4k-ish. Is that correct? Want to make sure these updates aren't additive!

Hi Brian! Yep that's right, I've been re-reviewing and replacing, remaking and removing textures from previous versions that I didn't find up to par in terms of quality among the other textures, and as part of the overarching work to optimize the pack overall. This mostly includes very tiny textures and effects that had been upscaled a long time ago, which generally only caused issues and yielded no noticable increase in quality at all. And no the updates aren't always additive, so I always recommend that you copy your save data over from an earlier version to the new for maximum compatibility and to avoid any potential issues!

Hello, a question that I could ask so that you can make me some textures for Donkey Kong 64 with the same method that you use? What would you ask me for in return? I'm very interested in it and I'm willing to pay whatever it takes to have those textures for that game.

Hello, I installed this on the steam deck and it works but I cant launch it from gaming mode.

henrikomagnifico

Hi Felix, unfortunately this seems to be an issue with Citra itself. Hopefully it gets resolved shortly!

Kooper 064

how long does it take to compile, as mine just sit with the bar going crazy and going from 30 to 40 over and over, is this normal? and if so how long will is sit at the top of my screen, thanks in advance

henrikomagnifico

If you are using the "Separate Screens" feature in Citra then that is why, since it is not supported by Reshade currently. You will need to either not use the Separate Screens feature in Citra or remove ReShade, which you can do by deleting the "opengl32.dll" file from the texture pack folder (this file might be hidden by default, in which case you will need to enable "show hidden files" in the explorer properties to see it)

i dont know where to download the rom

henrikomagnifico

Hi Augusto! I can't help you with downloading a game rom since that would be piracy and is illegal, and also goes against the Patreon terms of service. However if you want to get the game rom legally, you can do so by dumping the game from your own 3DS or 2DS game console by following these instructions: https://3ds.hacks.guide/dumping-titles-and-game-cartridges.html

Texture Nexxus

Will this work with the Majoras Mark Restoration Mod? I would love to play with these graphical enhancements but I know the 3ds version made some undesirable changes.

henrikomagnifico

Hi Texture Nexxus, yes the pack has been created with project restoration in mind and should be fully compatible with it.

Is it suppose to not allow you to roll at the start?

any possibility of HD textures for MM3D on a hacked 3DS? Will this work?

henrikomagnifico

Hi Mike, unfortunately none of my texture packs will work on real hardware due to the technical limitations of the consoles they were released on. Sorry!
