To give some historical context of this film, Ireland was partitioned in the early 1920s and most of the island became the Republic of Ireland, independent of Great Britain, and a section of northern Ireland remained united with Great Britain afterwards. The partition was extremely divisive, and the newly formed Republic of Ireland went into civil war over the partition, with those in favor of the partition eventually getting the upper hand. Many in Ireland viewed the British as a colonizing power with no right to control any part of Ireland, and there is a long history of animosity between the British and Irish that goes back centuries. Many who favored the partition considered it a temporary first step in getting all of Ireland independent and away from British control. When this film was made in 1992, it was in the middle of the time called "The Troubles." This was a conflict primarily involving Irish Republican paramilitaries (such as the IRA) who wanted Northern Ireland to be joined politically with the Republic of Ireland in the south, and Unionist paramilitaries and British authorities intent on keeping Northern Ireland unified with Great Britain (hence, the term Unionists). The Troubles raged from the late 60s until the Good Friday Agreement of 1998, six years after this film was made, and most of the paramilitary groups disarmed at that point. Still, when this film was made, no one knew how or when The Troubles would end, and news stories about the paramilitary violence in Northern Ireland were heard in much of the world.

The next one in the Jack Ryan series is Clear And Present Danger. It's one of my top 10 favorite all time movies. It makes you do a lot of thinking and it's a great story with just enough action, that won't feel like 2 and a half hours. Definitely worth seeing.
