Watching this trilogy now I don’t hate it. The biggest issue when it came out was is this a separate timeline or did this movie destroy everything that came before. The writers were insistent at the time that this destroyed everything else which turned off Star Trek fans. Also going in this was the first new Star Trek in 5 years after for me having new Star Trek weekly for 20 years growing up so expectations were too high since there wasn’t a tv series. If they had done a TV series too there wouldn’t have been as much backlash ILM also did the effects for Star Trek The Motion Picture which they had difficulty with causeing the effects to not get finished and the budget to be massive, which helped pay for Empire Strikes Back. Shatner wasn’t close to any of the cast. He saw Nimoy as a rival during the original series but they got along better after Trek.
